Thanks Bryan

Time to get 581 off the table and on the road

took it for a tentative 10 km ride into the village and back easing through gears testing the brakes etc and first impressions are this bike is much smoother than than the other bike, doesnt have the buzz through the bars and pegs, which I think might be due to the much stiffer red nolethane engine mount rubbers?....maybe. So with some good temperature in the motor  it was time for colour and carb tune,
cooling fans in place and the hole process took about 1/2 an hour

then out for another sneaky more confident run, still not pushing too hard got it briefly up to 120 with no clutch slip or 2nd gear issues.

Not bad for a parts donor bike

Carbies removed again today, for the 3rd time, and refitted 4 the fourth time, getting quicker at it
found more jets blocked. one of the starter jets in the bowl became blocked again....good, didnt wanna pull the carbs off again for nothing
but the best bit was finding 3 of the 4 pilot jets were blocked, more happy happy :D
on the initial strip and clean I paid attention to the crossed drilled holes and because all 4 miniscule holes at the pointy end of the jets were unable to see light through I thought there was no hole at that end just the cross drilling. (need to upgrade my specs :D)
And now 581 lives!!!
started up and ran reasonably well for the first time in 14 or so years.
Tomorrow will be off the operating table and a sneaky run up the road to see how everything else is going, get some good temp into the motor and do a colour & carbtune. woohoo

Well it fired up today but was running in a very rough manner.
Took a very steady hand to keep it alive on choke, the slightest bit of throttle would kill it
after finally getting it warmed up it would run ok in the upper rev  range, but mid throttle was very rough and idling was out of the question.
some time later after it cooled down I give it another start and felt the exhaust headers  2 & 4 were cold to touch while 1 & 3 were soon untouchable. the cold cylinders arent common to a single coil so it looks like the ignition side of thngs are ok
So it looks like the carbs are coming off again for some meticulous cleaning and checking of the idle and chocke circuits
These are the plugs after a few minutes of running. dont know if any tuning gurus can read anything into it  1-4 = L-R

Its all good Christian
Its a cloth bag type filter probably full of dust too (cant remeber last time it got emptied) and I think it absorbed what little amount of fuel got sucked up before it got to the explosive bare ergs part of the motor. :o
Also it was a calculated risk, tha calculation was its a cheapo retired from house duty vac and risk was no care if it blew up ......still got a broom to sweep the shed  :D
