Back to the engine......
After filling all the holes in the head with valves n springs n that I did an initial shim adjustment (thanks Grant for access to the shim bank) I decided to do a final leak test on the valves before fitting the head to the engine.

I filled the chambers with petrol and observed for a couple of minutes and all was well, so I switched off the lights and called it a day.

But when I returned in the morning I found this

Your opinions please
Given that the levels held for the first few minutes, would you call this result acceptable or?

Hey Grant
I swapped 3 shims all up, although I'm quite sure, after a short run in period, ( a fair way away yet) a re-shim will definitely be on the cards.
Just give us a buzz when your thinking of dropping by

Hey Steptoe,
I had a bit of a think about what you said about securing the bike before it goes belly up.  For me welding on anchor points and using tie downs wasn't ideal. So i had a bit of a look outside the square and decided to clamp down the centre stand instead.

Thanks scotty

Interesting info there Jeff....the numbers I've got will make the new chain approx 2.1mm longer than the old one so shouldnt be tight like the 650 chain

This may be why........comments from Mikes XS regarding an  XS650 ....maybe the same cabe said of the cam chains for an XS1100.

Cam Chain - Tsubaki BF05T x 102 with rivet link. Pitch .315" (8.0mm.) Fits: XS1/XS1B/XS2/TX650 1970-73 (34 tooth cam). Made in Japan NOTE:Link pitch differs from chains used on later 650's. For 70-73 650's Only! Installation Note: Cam Chain IS absolutely correct original brand/size/length/type Original install will be Very tight as chain is pressure injected with grease at factory and head gasket is not yet compressed. Install with tensioner assembly out and it may be necessary to pry chain over last half tooth of cam sprocket to get the chain in place so joiner link can be installed. Chain will loosen once head is torqued and engine is run a short time.

Rivet Link - D.I.D. 219FTss. Fits: #52-4008 Cam chain. Made in Japan

NOTE: May not fit to old original chains due to later chain dimension and
design improvements made to strengthen cam chain

I decided to leave the old cam chain in after comparing stretch with a new chain over a length of 9 links, the old chain was actually "tighter" than the new one ??? ichecked and checked and checked coming up with the same result every time

Next item for attention was the cylinders
gave them a light hone

there was virtually no cross hatching left and you might be able to  see in the LH side cylinder they were quite polished

After honing the bore dimensions were checked

And they all came up within tolerance, just, for standard bore, so luckily no o/size boring required This is a tight arse rebuild anyway as this bike was originally purchased to be a donor so thats one expense not required you might be able to make out the sizes written in texta.....limit is 71.6mm, new ring gaps were also right in the middle of the tolerance range too.

All that done and on with the barrels

I did cut the filter open but it was spotless, even the oil when drained after 14 years of just sitting there was honey coloured. I think PO probly did a service, had his "timing problem" on start up and never saw any combustion action.

Paul, I've seen valves like that before. When I had my original E in the eighties, I did my first camchain swap, but used the "C" mark on the rotor instead of the "T" mark. Silly me then used the starter to spin the motor over. Result was strange "plopping noise from the exhaust and 4 bent valves.
That's one mistake I'll never make again!

That won't explain the stuff on the oil strainer though. (Have you cut the old filter open to see if there's any particles in it?)
Are there any signs of chain contact marks inside the camcover & camchain tunnel? Maybe the PO had let the chain go for too long and it had a lot of slap in it, maybe chewing out the guides and associated mount bolts, brackets etc. Looks like it had run for some time for it to have that much stuff up in the strainer screen.
Can't think of anywhere else that would have that much material in it to lose. Gearbox engagement dogs would be too small for that amount of bits.
Keep us posted

Hey Geoff
the table can take a complete XS and me standing on it at the same time. Wont have to worry about getting the bike off before it gets too heavy there is a hidden mechanism for raising and lowering the table 8)
