Hey Errol
The PO said he had a "timing accident" and didnt really elaborate, But after going through all the valves and checking for true

These stuck out like the proverbial dogs b___s

#1 hopefully your going to tie the bike down before to much else gets done, a couple of tie points welded in front corners may be ad--van--tagious, they look better with their own head on ::)

#2 I see your polishing skills are improving each time

#3 you,ll find a lot of the plastic is off the back of the cam chain adjusters and primary chain back lash block, left from moulding

#4  with the vaccuum these pumps create, the bits of "stuff" in the gause would have been no real problem, there was still plenty of clean screen left and the pieces were large enough not to cause a fine restrictive wall

#5 the bit of gravel would have been dropped in by not cleaning around the filler plug before undoing

apart from that,, love your work :D, marvellous how the workshop moves around the house while mums away :-*

Nice work Jonesy. You'd wanna have a good idea where all that metal came from before you go starting it.

Looking good, Paul! The piece of gravel in the sump is a bit of a mystery. ( very dirty funnel used at oil change?)
Wanna refresh my memory as to the nature of the PO's drama with the bike that resulted in you getting it? I suppose what ever it was would be responsible for the metal bits on the strainer.

I pulled the sump off today and glad I did, was a bit of surprise finding this,
there was a mixture of stuff in the sump.
Magnetic and non magnetic metals, gravel one lump about 3mm, silastic, and general grit of unknown origin

The stuff on the pump strainer was real gritty and had to  pick it off,  probly restricted the pump a bit too I'd reckon

First thing was to get 581 up on the operating table. I'd made this table up to get a comorable work height when doing a fll resto on my old guzzi. since moved house and never really had any need for it with the modern fan dangled TRX. nearly got chopped up a couple of times for a little job round the farm that one of them pieces of steel woulda been handy for. luckily, somehing else was always able to fit the bill
So the tables been resurrected.

Next job after sorting throughtt some boxes was to get the cylinders, head and valve cover soda blasted

then nto the makeshift heated spray both, The block and the paint spent day in the sun prior to this as the atmospheric temp didnt get ove 6deg but a good sunbake got em nice and warm to the touch

Then into the curing bay.........while the missus was away ;)
