Geoff might be able to list some bearing numbers and dimensions up for us, I think most of the bearings will be deep groove ball bearings with numbers like say 6306 C3 or similar. All the 63XX & 62XX series bearing are off the shelf.........unless mister yamha modified them a bit like making them thinner? I've got an SKF and a FAG hard cover bearing catalogue at hand to quickly Identify standard bearings if it of any use to you Geoff.

Has anyone ever tried to source the gearbox bearings for these old girls.

Are they a common or off the shelf size.

Often in bikes they use some strange size that no one else keeps.

Over the w/end with the help from Ev the motor has finally landed on the table for surgery,,
this is the main reason the head is coming off and motor is coming out

the rust growing on number 1 valve stem, couldn,t start it with that on it,
as we were going thru pulling it down water kept showing up through out the job,, the first place was the oil journals in the cams, from turning the motor over keeping it wet with the diesel I,d be thinking

at this point I know I,m on the right track so tear it down we do.

Cams come out we pull the adjuster off and find top water level

as we kept moving the motor around, there was always a new puddle of water the size of a 20 cent piece

with the head off and knowing it has to be refurbished it was sat to one side without a second thought, the barrels are next, no real signs of real damage in the bores

nothing a light hone won,t fix, believe me that was a major worry

it,s a bit hard to see in the pic, but there are small lines where the water has sat between the rings and some small circular stains from who,d know what

the only damage to the barrels really is a bit rust on the outside of the skirt on number 1 again for some reason,,

I,m not really worried about it as a light brush with the bead blaster will have it back to smick in no time

continuing with the pull down, all flat surfaces have sludge on them

getting to the point of splitting the cases, we,re still  moving and turning the motor upside down and we find this,,

among the gearbox there is small spots of rust here and there, but again nothing a light brush of beads won,t fix
not a bad result considering it was sitting in water

not surprising more sludge on the base

so after a couple of hours the motor looks like this and now it,s time to clean her up

Maate, ATM, I haven't got the time (as you've seen), so I felt obliged to help in any way that I could, so I did.

which is where the REALLY big dilemma starts,, if that amount of crap is on the valve stem,, how much is sitting on which ever valve seats that were open,,

Geoff,
If you decide to rip the head off to see if theres any gunk sitting on top of the pistons, I've got a head gasket you can have.

Eddy, the bolts Geoff was after are the big arsed ones on the bottom. I found some on Speed and Sport for $25.49 each + postage but came up with cheaper option of stumpy hex heads with thick washers for a buck. I reckon we try to save the $$$$ for more vital areas required to get the bike running first, then maybe look at getting original bits later.

PS. for anyone interested, those bolts are the same on the '82 XZ550RJ handlebars, as the US sites don't seem to cater for overseas models. - CLICK
