main question can you run either coils on either system ballast resistor bypassed?

the ballast resistor is for the 1.5 ohm coils but not a big deal... (note: the self-proclaimed experts on the yank site always grandly state that the tci will "burn out" if you don't have the resistor)... hohoho,   me been running 1.5 ohm coils(dynacoils) with no resistor and 2H7 tci for donkeys years.. all sweet

The only difference with coils will be the secondary output voltages. As a rule of thumb...i would use the coils and plugs suited to the tci unit as per book. A different ratio of primary and secondary resistance will produce a weaker or stronger spark also in accordance with the type of plug being used. When chasing a fault....keep things matched as they should be per book and there won t be any doubts . Not sure if a higher or lower primary resistance will or may become an issue with damaging the tci . They are a fairly robust unit as evident by the excellent service life they they still produce today....some 39 yrs on after manufacture.
The power transistors are good for around 15 amps............a 3 ohm coil will draw around 4 amps . A 1.5 ohm coil with ballast resistor removed /bridged out will draw around 8 amps.
Did you use new plug caps? Are the existing coils the ones that were on the bike when it was flood damaged ?
Are the plug caps the resistor style? I would changeover the plug caps and check there is no issue with spark shorting to the engine which is what it sounded like it was doing when you were adjusting the plug cap on and off the spark plug and getting varying results. The tci unit would appear to have a clean bill of health as you have tested this on your bike without issues. However it would nt hurt to remove the plastic casing and give it a visual once over to check there is not murky residue in there from the soaking it got.

original coils yes, and box before/during flood, that,s kind of where we,re going today, spares in the cupboard, run fine during initial running, system must have warmed up and started breaking down

plugs new, with back-ups

miles and ooddles of fuel, no issue there,

main question can you run either coils on either system ballast resistor bypassed?

Are these the original coils that were in the bike?
There is a possibility of water ingress of the coils from it being soaked.
How did you determine 2 and 3 were at fault? Is it a fuel or electrical fault or both?
Do you have a full set of "New "plugs in the bike?
Have you removed each plug and lead and checked for spark ?
Have you checked  fuel flow from both taps to the carbs ?

so now the rally,s done and dusted,
so I had floody in the carport ready for delivery, hit the start button and no 4 plug was crook, if I lifted the cap up a bit she run better, took it away she stopped, put the cap in situ it,ll run like a goat,,
swapped a plug out of mine and it ran right, so out onto the road homeward bound, 1 1/2 klm it started spluttering and stopped just short of the caltex, fuelled her up and nothing,
this time 2 and 3 were the culprits, so home it came in the trailer,
straight up you,d be thinking TCI box {well I would}, but it may go deeper,

we have an RH, standard wiring harness, std advance mech, 2H7 box, but  because std coils don,t fit in the frame, still running RH coils, can it sound that simple, will they not run mis-matched or does something end up in a degree of fried

      so this w/end coil swap to std with maybe a make em fit bracket of some sort and a box swap, still original from flood, {box works on mine though}

                                                            the saga continues
Eddie also shared a story with starting running hic-cup and cleaning main fuse holders, so will do something with that, {again}

                                                       SHE,S ALIVE
of course only after the seemingly obligatory cock-ups, didn,t put the advance mechanism in the crank end square did we so there was no spark till we worked that out, luckily it didn,t damage the pick ups as it went round

but fired straight away once that technical was sorted,
needs a new cam chain tensioner, and a couple of tweeks but she runs and idles, blows a bit to much smoke but hopefully that will die quickly,

very relieved to say the least, there were times when I thought do I ring old mate and say shes dead, but we kept on keeping on to todays end

must be you mate, I,ve pics,,

the only bearing I didn,t replace, but at the time seemed alright, {obviously not} is the starter clutch end cap bearing,
as rough and notchy as a square wheel at revs

would also explain some of the metal,, but not the amount of sludge I wouldn,t think,
one thing I did think of was maybe I didn,t wash the crank as thoroughly as I thought after getting it linished

bloody pleased/relieved about this let me tell you,

before I take the engine out, a suggestion was to take the sump off and have a squiz,
and this is what we found
how an engine that has been through what I,ve put it through can create this much rubbish inside ten minutes of running is beyond me

having then split the engine to get at the gearbox bearings, which are as smooth as new, and see the mains which can be seen as clean and shiny without the gouges and scores that I was expecting

possibly all the metal is from the starter clutch gear, you can,t really see, but all the teeth have lost the shiny metal coating {hard facing??} and looks like a brass gear

there are no scores in the pots
will start with the starter clutch tomorrow and next week and see what comes of that, there,s nothing else jumping out

I put a new set of rings on a standard set of pistons hoping I could do a refresh on the cheap but it didnt work out. So the pistons and rings are free to a good home. I eventually went big bore with Wiseco's.

I'm sure that amongst the brethren we can rustle up a top end of some description.  I have a spare set of barrels that match the spare pistons.  The barrels have a few broken fins so they are surplus to requirement,  If you need them they're yours.

lets just hope it,s the cheapest option,

as I said to someone the other day, this project  hasn,t been done on a shoe string budget,,,,, it,s been done on a thong plug,

I haven,t talked to the owner for a while but last time we chatted he didn,t have  2 dollar coins to rub together for an ext{p}ensive style rebuild

it,s already cost him just over $1000, I really don,t want to have to ring him and ask him to put in more dollars
