Tim......can you connect a colortune to each spark plug in turn and see which cylinder  is giving you a miss when you rev it ?....or looks different to the others.
Have you changed the TCI unit with a known working one?
Have you changed coils to eliminate them as an issue?
When riding is the popping just that?.....or do you have a flat spot or hesitation?

Sunday session
I'll need rehab soon
ok thinking about the vacuum advance mechanism  and the dreaded wires contained within  so off comes the case cover have look and feel of the wires, feels ok ,replace vacuum line and check its sealing under load
with the motor running I do the jiggle and push test no change in the engine note
jumped on engaged clutch  twist throttle  lo and be hold it hits 5k  no popping
foot note: the wires look very original  only noted a tiny little nic in one of them
cover back on and round the block  now it gets over 4 k and pops  so the fault has to be in the loom
Geoff yes start ya bastard was used with no result
air filter was in good condition was blown clean
I attempted to test caps multimeter showing flat battery, removed caps and checked internal wire the insulation was trimmed back a few mill to make a better connection
the search  continues

Advance mechanism? springs or counterweights might be jammed?
Starving for air? Major blockage in  the airways.

But all that is probly irrelevant since the carbs run good on one bike and crap on the other, you need to spin or weave another loom

ah hang on, the jammed springs or counterweights might still be particular to the misbehaving bike.....

Advance Mechanism? Starving for air?
I shall don the orange curly wig

please explain?

if the mechanism is housed in a sealed area ie behind a case cover how dose it breathe  or is there some tiny vent in the main case?

360 klm road test on my bike to take them down to Tims, a very strong, smooth set of carbs,  but soon as returned to the original bike  they play up I'm stlll thinking its in the loom or these replacement fuel taps don't have the flow volume to feed the carbs properly

first off, colortunes are junk at best, blue is uselessly lean and
they're total bollocks to even try to read ..

4k is point where hi jet takes over from lo
jet,  riding at 3.5k it's still just the pilot
circuit running, sussed from plug chops, if pilot's too rich
, black carbon you get, right hi jet circuit instantly zaps it at 4k, sounds like pilots ok but hi circuit's chugging as waay rich...

did we spray start ya barstard around the intakes at home,?
your air filter was pretty crappy wasn,t it
has it stopped filling the vaccuum line to the tap up ?
maybe the vaccuum advance hose has splits in it
have you or did we check the ohms on all 4 caps when at home, could well be the prob,,, {should read 5000}
take a cap off the lead, does the wire look corroded,   {white or rusty} do all 4

let us know when all thats done

Hi all heres another update
where dose it end   ok started offending vehicle up  let it warm up  moved it to the top of the drive way  its humming away   1.5ish    so I give the throttle a twist
revs smoothly to 5-6k    no popping  so I go for a run round the block  take off is good  idle is smooth   but soon as 4k arrives on the tacho   its starts chugging
so what could be failing under load ,  no load  revs smoothly  on the road 4k it chugs

hey Tim - you think it's just acting out hey......
I am starting to think that the little niggling things that happen with my 750S are just Italian attention seeking....  :D

another update
fired her up  it chugged  a bit hit the choke came good  went for a run up the hill  yes it  still hit the wall at 4k   but one instance  it reved through 4k to 5.5k  then started struggling at 3.5k   ,but it felt like it was struggling for fuel   on the back off it popped rather loudly  then felt good again   so I'm beginning to wonder if it is a hypochondriac
