While I was browsing for a suitable pic of an XS with a smaller tank, I came across this pic of the one at Amaroo taken in 1977!! Must've been a preproduction bike, American spec I guess. Would anyone have any more info on this particular bike??

Lots more great pics at http://www.deejay51.com/six_hour_1977.htm
Definately the American version due to polished alloy engine finish , different side cover emblem , flatter looking tank profile , riders footpegs don t have end cap fitted.

Mmmm, thanks Eveready, hard to say witch  one looks better, probably the big one, certainly adds to the brutish look of Brian's bike, love the style Brian,
A bloke i know recons he can make me an alloy tank, hasn't put a cost to it yet, we'll see!   just a thought tho, is there any transport regulations about hand made tanks? does anyone know?
maby the one in the us for about $180 might be the go, cheers, Max..

Makzy, the bigger tank is slightly taller. The easiest place to see the difference is in front of the fuel filler. The smaller tank has a gentle slope down to the frame saddle area, while the biggun' has a much more pronounced curve down to it.
I'm think that spare tank at Steptoe's is a 21 litre one from memory.

^ BIG ^ "Thanks Bryan"

^ Not so big ^

Yeah Jeff, very nice, that one didn't come up in my search, i sent an email to the seller of the first one, looks like it is a bit rusty inside, looks just like mine inside, I didn't know the us tanks were smaller, are they shorter or narrower? postage is $100, tank $75 thats not too bad if it was ok, and it fitted! will keep looking tho, going to see a guy tomoro that might be able to fix mine, has anyone used that tank treatment stuff before? a mate told me he used it on a honda tank a couple of years ago, reconed it didn't work but he's not very handy with tools, might not have done it rite,   thanks heaps,

If all else on the local scene fails........

.......good ones are like the proverbial hens teeth. But who knows what people have stashed in their garage/sheds.

Ps keep in mind the USA Standard tank only holds 21ltrs ,  compared to the Aus tank at 24 ltrs.
Also not overly keen on the way they badge the side of the tank.....i think the sticker decal is a better looking option.
This tank that was sold will make you cry....in a lot of ways.....($Au440.70...oh and don t forget the p&h !!! )
