Hey Ev,
I agree with Jeff the numbers are still relevant, the white metal bearings are considerably softer than the crank and casing material, they are sort of the sacrificial component in the assembly..
Using the number system, I'm up for 4 black and 1 brown set of bearings

Jonesy...link works for me...might be your confuser.
Ev....are nt the bearings the ones that are designed to wear before the crankshaft ?
The workshop manual sets out which bearing to use according to the assembled parts tolerances.
I would think the only time you would used a bearing other than what is specified according to markings and calculations would be where there is or has been obvious signs of wear to the crank and had been machined or measured out of tolerance....due to wear.
Jonesy...as an indicator of where tolerances are at....measure a bearing you have removed....against the new one calculated to be the one to install and see what the difference is .

I'd just go the Blue set, Paul. Those numbers on the crank are from when they're brand new. Once they've done some miles, those numbers are redundant.

You could measure the journals if you're worried about it though

Thanks for reminding me Eddy, I've used the stamped number method you talk about
Heres some of my old notes from another rebuild
Spose i should do it properly and use that method again

EDIT: Jeff I tried your link but got some sort of real old school web page that didnt work?

Section 3-26 ..to..3-28 in the XS1100E (Superior Standard ) OEM workshop manual tells it all.
Plastiguage used for conrod bearing measurement.....
Case number...minus journal number...gives you number/size/colour  of crank bearing to use.

At Wellington, Mal explained to me how to determine which bearings to use on the crank.

It had something to do with a set of numbers engraved on the cases and a set of numbers engraved on the crank. After that the "how' to id which bearing is a blurr.

Can Any more tech savvy members elaborate?

Hey Eddy
I like those prices better
I've got part numbers for an "E" so should cover all?
Reading through topics here it sounds like the blue ones are a good general all purpose fit, yeah nah?

Paul,

Do you have a book with the part # for these.  If not I have.

Is $250 Aussie fair price for a set of crankshaft bearings?
