I drive a Ute all over Sydney for often a large part of the day. Im always aware of keeping at least 2 secs or more behind bikes. I also ride to and from work in shit traffic. I often get cars tailgating me...or so it seems. But in my case I think they're just trying to get a closer look as mine looks a little differerent. Maybe its the flames and the 130 rear tyre....??.  But at least they see me. A quick tap on rear brake usually backs em off. ( enough to activate brake light ). I sometimes wear this ''piss off dont get to close lid''....seems to work. And another thing; -----what sort of range should I get on reserve? Ran out of Motion Lotion today, luckily  was right out side a Servo. I cant of gone more than 25 ks on reserve. I thought tank held 4 litres on reserve???

yep bike-riding cage-drivers are usually fine, the remaining percentage of cagers are all very very suspect..  ::)

Hey....i resemble that remark!!!
I m a cage driver as well.....how many bike owners....DON T own and drive a car. Have yet to clean up a motorcyclist. But while out on the road each day....i m shakin my head at idiots who should never of thrown a leg over a motorcycle let alone own one. It s a shame....but the truth.
I agree with your defensive riding comment though. Place your life in YOUR hands....not someone elses as best as possible.

common screw-in indicators, drill 10mm holes in headlght ears and bolt em' on...

relying on extra lights for traffic to "see you" won't do f-all except lull rider into some sort of false sense of security,

underestimate the clueless-ness of the average cage driving moron at your peril, a whole christmas tree of flashing lights and screaming air-horns won't help if not riding "no cars can see you" style,

on a bike trust no bastard on four wheels out on the road. Ever.  If clowns can't even see one headlight then little chance they'll be seeing any "extras"

I took the old Beemer for it's first decent run yesterday.

Cops passed me on the barton Highway and gave me a big stare, couldn't work out what they were looking at.

Turns out I had bumped the high beam switch and the two LED lights on the crash bars were on.

Didn't get pulled up so I guess I was lucky.

Just to reinterate....DRL s must be of a particular design to suit the purpose and have the appropriate standards stamp  marked.
They must also be switched so as to not operate at night ....only on their own during hours between dawn and dusk.
Anything else is deemed illegal.
Just as fog lights may not be used for that purpose. I have 2 vehicles that have fog lights installed as standard by the manufacturer....as you drive/ ride down the road ....your virtually inviting to be pulled over and recieve a ticket...by saying " look at me " ????????
You can t convert indicators for the purpose as they are not standards approved.
During the daytime use DRL s are not to dazzle or cause discomfort to other road users.
I believe the way the XS1100 E has the double filamet front indicators
To serve as park lights and being a low wattage filament and amber lens would be considered a "running or clearance lamp" which has no restrictions on use.
Ev great to hear your not doing 120 kms of unlit backroads on nightshift. That is self preservation in itself.
Your only chasing the odds of having an accident no matter what lights you run.....just check out the previous nights roadkill that is made available as the morning menu for other critters.
You don t want to be item # 13 on that menu ????

Chrisso, we're talking about the front ones, but it's for a Special so it's a different scenario as the lower clamp bolts are positioned differently to a Standard, mate.

Al, maybe something like this will do the trick?? - CLICK

You'd most probably get them much cheaper over there on the UK Ebay site, but they look like they'd fit if you unbolted the mounts they come with and slipped them onto those XJ750 ones we discussed.

and maybe a pair of these might leave you with the effect you're looking for (combined with a pair of decent LED bulbs) - CLICK

I'm not 100% sure those lenses will fit those light bodies, but have a look around as there's plenty more to choose from

Heres a pic of bike with old indicators. And then one with new LEDS.. Not sure if this any use. Actually new LEDS arent as bright as I thought they'd be.. But they do flash regularly---maybe thats the new flasher unit.                                                  old;                                                                                                                                                                                new;              These pics are a few months apart due to bike being knocked over by dopey f...ing driver.  Note clever use of cable tie on front blinker.....

My old ones were the rectangular chrome ones that bolt thru the hole at the rear of the frame by the back guard. But my fronts bolt to each side of the oil cooler. Dont they attach to the lower triple clamps on a standard XS?. I'll see if I can post some before and after pics

Hi,   I just fitted new aftermarket LED indicators to my XS and they are great. And half the price of Yam ones. They need a rectifier ( I think thats what it is??) to work. Will probably need to play around with the flasher unit too. ---but there cheap ( aftermarket).

I'm still struggling to find the answer to my original question.

Some of our bikes have chrome rectangler indicators that have a bolt to clamp it onto a indicator stem.

My question was :- which bike be it XS1100 or other Yamaha have the same chrome bolt on indicator BUT a round shape like on some of our bikes BUT bolts onto the stem NOT the stem being part of the bowl.

Al.....from what i have read re UK Daytime Running Light Regulations......the light must comply and be marked ECE R87. If using a light other than a dipped low beam as a DRL ......must not work in conjuction with night lighting.
If you do a search on ECE R87 there is plenty to read and consider to stay legal.
