Thanks for all the info guys.

At this stage, i'm still looking into it.

I've already soaked every removable jet/float/seat etc and resprayed/wiped before fitting.
Doesn't appear that the floats are compressing the float needles enough. Will re-check the heights over the weekend.
I did find two bowls that had blocked passages. Apart from that, the rest seems as it should be.

For what it's worth, i managed to unblock the bowls by heating them in boiling water and then shooting carb cleaner through while they were expanded.

I only stripped mine as far as they would with the four still connected. Just all the jets, needle n seat and cups. I remember Pete was worried about the butterfly seals I think. The mechanic at first said he wanted them stripped more but then changed his mind after having a second look and it ended up fine. Can't say what type of chemical/acid bath it was though?

Check this thread out, page 7 is what pgnz is talking about and it got mine going, and pictures as well, and page 8 was the clincher to get it going properly

I'd get another carb with a non-dented brass float.   Separating then re-joining four carbs is a right royal pita ,  no need to,  if carbs are still gummed it'll be the circuits inside restricted, look to where they run, scrape em' all out with fine wire, just soaking won't get rid of gunk, just loosens it, got to blast air and wd40 or whatever thru the passages, find the choke/starter circuit and starter jets and run wire thru them they're prone to gum up.   cleaned out, bench -synched by eye, stock jets and settings, all electrics good, fuel bowls primed, vacuum taps and manifold hoses all good,  one prod on starter button should fire instant cold start full choke !!

Cheers guys, yeah i'm on my third can of carb cleaner. Soaked all removable jets, floats, needles in carb cleaner for almost a week. Then sprayed them all again before fitting...

Might have to separate them and go the chemical/ultrasonic route. I've never separated carbs before so that'll be something new.

P.S. Although Devcon MSDS says it has "Very Good" tolerance for unleaded fuel - it doesn't. So i'm also a float pin post short.

Hi there .
Just a couple of things 1 use a couple of spay tins of carby cleaner flood and soak parts and a good blow out with compressed air ( be carefull carby clean makes me itchy and some times a rash) 2 make sure you remove needle and seat there is a little filter behind each seat which blocks up with rust from tank. 3 install good in line fuel filters. if you go down line of chemical bath remove all plastic and anything that could be damaged by the chemicals its nasty stuff!

Hey Matt I lost a bag full of gear including the blue spots and adaptor plates among other things on the way to Bourke last year. Managed to scrounge up another set and they are on the bike now. The spare carbies were in another bag and made it's way back home safe though and just waiting for a rebuild.
I will be interested in what you end up buying, I would like to buy a rebuild kit as well but unsure if I should go for a stock rebuild kit or one with larger (maybe selection of) Jets for a set of aftermarket air filters.

I would recommend a chemical bath for your carby bodies to make sure they are well and truly clean. Stripped mine several times and only after the bath did things finally sought out.

wouldn't waste money with all new bits if original stuff is ok,  needles jets and emulsion tubes are fine if the carbs and circuits are clean,  (unless emulsion tubes are worn oval inside-  doubtful)  Though maybe new float valves if the originals don't seal.  But jets gaskets needles  diaphragms and stuff new it's all spendy  for no result if there's nothing wrong with the ones in there already,   new bits won't fix blocked circuits

Thanks  :)
I've spent a week already cleaning these carbs and i'm still getting some grief. Plus, floats have been previously "crushed" inwards - for lack of a better term. And now needles/seats aren't working. To me, $100 bucks on carb parts might be a better option than spending a week or two fitting/stripping/cleaning/diagnosing/refitting/retesting etc etc...

Hey Matt,

I have used the kits available on ebay before to good effect and reasonably priced.

Shipping from the US of A is usually one week.

In fact I pretty much source all of my NOS pars from the US.

There is a guy in Kempsey, Yam rare Spares

He has a whole list of stuff, you'll need to contact him with a shopping list  :o :o :o :o

And the BEST place I've found for NOS stuff is from this site.  Highly recommended.

Good luck with the carbs.

There's a full set of carbs, Bluespot calipers, adapters and tools sitting on the side of the road somewhere between Orange and Bourke  courtesy of Bretts ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Cheers

Eddy

Hey Gents,

Seems after cleaning and soaking the bajeezuz out of my carbs, jets, floats, needles etc i've developed some new, "extra" issues with my carbs i didn't have before.  :o

Rather than chasing my tail for weeks i'm thinking i might just go for a rebuild kit - new jets/needles/floats etc... These were BLOODY dirty!

Wondering where's a good place to start in sourcing bits? Or do you guys just go genuine?

Cheers!

Matt
