Ignition coils are usually nominally operated at around 8 volts depending on the make. They are supplied with the correct voltage by dropping the normal 12 volts through a "Dropping resistor". The rational is that when the battery is loaded at start the output voltage will drop. By bypassing the resistor while starting the correct (or as close as) full nominal voltage will be supplied during start providing a full spark at start up.
Running an 8 volt coil at above it's nominal voltage may shorten it's life but may also increase it's output I don't know about that though.

That's the theory. I'm not sure what operating voltage the aftermarket coils operate at so my advice may not be relevant in this case.

I agree. ;D
Fitted those coils with the rebuild all seems good. The bike was set up before with standard coils with ballast removed never fried any thing..
Hey anyone do any km per litre or litres per 100km checks.
I found I was using an extra 2 litres of fuel to Bryan and 4 litres more then Tom each fill on the way down????

I guess I'm with you on this one PGNZ,

I put the Dyna Coils on 2 Bourkes ago and the only thing I've fried is the bacon, eggs and sausages for breakfast.

Like I said before my old girl hasn't run this good for as long as I can remember.

On the stock coil setup, because of the ridiculous ballast resistor the blackbox only gets a measly 6 volts or so through to the coils when the engine's running. Although one of the blackbox's wires grabs 12volts off the starter solenoid when the starter motor cranks.  Then pumps it to the coils on startup. ( bypasses the ballast resistor because it's a separate circuit)

Once your thumb's off the starter button the 12V is cut and the coils are back to the measly 6 volts or so.  The way superior dynacoils don't need that pampering nonsense,  with dynacoils you remove the ballast resistor for full 12V at all times.  Means you can disconnect the  wire connection from the starter relay coz the 12V bypass on startup's no longer needed.   BTW ignore the theorists and know-alls on the yank site claiming the brown 1.5ohm dynacoils with no ballast resistor will "fry the blackbox" .   I've only been running mine trouble-free that way for a decade or so..    8)

Hey Tim,

I did the Dyna Coil mod on my E model.  The difference in crisp performance was instantly recognisable. I've noe done 2 Bourke rides on it and had no trouble with the bike.  The coils cost me $150 and took me around 2 hours to install.  I added the NGK spark plug caps for good measure.

I followed the link that just Jonesy posted no probs
