ive just ordered a shinko 230 tour master
rear tyre.  $180.00
in the past ive had the cheaper shinkos , bt45 and  metzlers tyres
fitted to the rear.
all these tyres have only lasted a year at best,
so be interesting to see how these go,
there also have a v rating with a top speed of 150mph.

BT45's are multi compound I have never had a wet weather problem except when they get a bit low.
Always been ok on corners.
I don't care much about the wear so I have never watched it, I'd rather they hang on.

A tyres wet performance is not a real big issue for me as I consider all tyres to be suss in the wet....old ladies in bowing hats pass me in the rain ;D

I dont know how people get those klms out of tyres, just blows me out.
As for BT45's, I can speak very very highly about them on my old Ducatis, , but dont know about a much heavier XS. They have loads of good grip in the dry and even arent a bad track day tyre, but in the wet and a heavy bike ??? Dont know but I would think they would be pretty damn reliable.

Mate, if you think those numbers are higher than the norm, I had a lady friend in my old Ulysses branch who got 37,000klms out of a dual compound Continental Radial (touring tyre) on the rear of her ZRX1200!

Hmm some interesting numbers are coming out of this.
first I never heard of 20,000k's out of a tyre. probably 14-15 thou out of a front for me
and 2nd new one for me is 2 fronts to 1 rear? usually the other way round
Scarfey It doesnt surprise me a 20,000 tyre is dodgy in the wet.
Grant, I'm getting a list of tyres together to run by Dave for prices etc and Bike Stop Lithgow will be my dealer of choice.(Its not the ABC is it? we can plug a good bike shop when we come across one?)
Christian, how are the BT45's in the wet? have you worn a set out yet to give the Km's one could expect

I've got continentals. They are great in the wet but still only new so I'm not sure of wear. Hal at TJ Tyres reccomends them. He's been selling them to the BMW rider who he says a re happy ith the wear etc.

I had Avon Road Runners on my first XS they were good but a bit hairy in the wet. I used to get 20K plus out of them. I would get more now I've quietened down a bit. [old age]

Paul,
Ive been running Metzlers from Dave on the pig now for the last two sets. In our conditions they are fabulous. I dont know if its just me , but Ive worn front tyres out before rears on the pig.(2 fronts to 1 rear) They just chew off. I run usually 30-32 front and 32 rear pressures one up. and if the lady comes along maybe 34-36 rear and 32 front. Must admit I tend to push the old girl a bit (they arent Ducatis thats for sure.)
Anyway see Dave, he will sort you out a decent deal.

avon road riders for my money,, although my riding style has change over time,

this set went on at 42,440klm,, we are now on 60,000klm,,with the tyre indicators just level with the tread,, the rear will be replaced this week, were as the front still has the best part of 1/2 life left,,

any long running was done 2 up,  with several shorter 2 up runs, most of it was normal round town commute work, hasn't been any hard off the line work, or lighting up in moments of youth

the main thing I put it down to is constant tyre pressure checks,{every 2 or 3 weeks} and the pressures themselves,, for many yrs now I've run 38 in the rear and 32 in the fronts,, yes it's a bit high, but the way it was explained to me was, a normal pressured tyre will move {like putting your hands together with fingers spliced and moving your palms away and closed,} creating a lot of heat that can't be cooled quick enough by the air going round it,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, where as a tyre that doesn't move as much doesn't create the same amount of heat, running a lot cooler

this theory of course is used in running tyres in the heat up here in the CQ, {or any where else for that matter} with bugger all corners,,,,, and would probably fail dismally in the cold of a bathurst winter or the alpines,, have never ridden in snow or ice situations
