Title: wire wheels
Post by: Jonesy :-) on January 16, 2014, 04:54:20 PM
Been thinking about the rear wheel adaptor and the off centre line of rim and wheel hub, and I came up with an idea to eliminate or at least drastically reduce the off set the very rough sketch below gives an idea of what I have in mind
...........slow burning topic/mod ahead

(https://xs1100.com.au/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimagizer.imageshack.us%2Fv2%2F800x600q90%2F822%2Fmhxk.jpg&hash=8ecad2ffade836b43aab9dbbccd66119858e2852)

would you be able to use slightly different length spokes to pull the hub off centre instead of or as well as the adaptor,,

being fifo for 6 mths,, this is going to be a very long slow burning mod, unless workshop still does "foreigners" ::)
Title: Re: wire wheels
Post by: Jonesy :-) on January 20, 2014, 04:41:08 PM
Yeah Steptoe it'll be a combo of new style adaptor and different length spokes as there will still be about 5mm offset compared to about 15 that the first one had, but, the old style adaptor does retain the plastic guard between wheel and diff for that "OEM factory" look. still a long way for this mod to go yet.

Step 1
remove wheel from donor bike
(https://xs1100.com.au/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimagizer.imageshack.us%2Fv2%2F800x600q90%2F538%2F977ZA5.jpg&hash=3e0773d00d9b9cc81001e2fdda5df7c5880f7608)
Step 2
remove donor hub from donor wheel from donor bike with a 9" hub donor tool
(https://xs1100.com.au/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimagizer.imageshack.us%2Fv2%2F800x600q90%2F633%2FpRsrux.jpg&hash=4997916c4eb635fcc75de63bb0f371b88f74a7ba)
Step 3
Reward yourself for 12 months of FIFO work with one of these hub converting machines
(https://xs1100.com.au/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimagizer.imageshack.us%2Fv2%2F800x600q90%2F908%2FPKtlJ1.jpg&hash=8d337b2445b728ae8731c6f594b81a5eb60b02b2)
Title: Re: wire wheels

Step 4
Set the chopped out hub in 4 jaw chuck.
I used the brake disc mounting face and the Bearing housing as dial indicator references to get radial and axial planes to within approx 0.03mm or <0.002" before machining off remains of mag wheel spoke stubs left behind by the 9"donor tool.
Things will probly slow down again now until I can source some billet material and a boring bar.

Looking good Paul,
So how do you fit this adaptor over machined hub and keep it secure? Screws / retaining bolts or shrink /pressfit?
I think I can see where you are headed here.
Drilling for spokes will aso be an art I think. getting angles right?
Good luck, will watch with interest.

BTW, you still FIFO?  Im finishing my QLD /home oddessey this month, back to Sydney to new role in CBD.

Grant

"Just liking them" IS a logical reason  ;D
Are spoked rims hard to come by to suit the tyre size for the front and rear ...of which is my next question. What size and profile tyres will you be selecting according to the spoked rims and rear swingarm restriction ?.
Do you recall what the weight difference was ? With the standard exhaust and the associated low down grunt is there the possibility of tyre spin on the rim ? With the enquirys re braided brake lines ....i see on your old bike you had these with the underslung rear caliper . Do you recall if they were store bought or custom made lines you had in the day ?
Title: Re: wire wheels
Post by: Jonesy :-) on July 04, 2015, 08:27:08 AM
Man you sure ask a lot of questions :)
Standard rim sizes are readily available for the front. Last time i went for an 18" rear due to more tyre choices back in the day, and more room to lace up for the 15m offset in hub to rim centerline, still havent decided on rim size for the rear yet, and to be honest havent shopped around to see whats available but ill be sticking to standard 110 and 130 tyre widths front and rear respectively. Weight saving is minimal, the majority is in the hub and brake disc. Tyre spin on the rim wasnt a drama back then and there are more powerful bikes than these that dont have rim locks. Brake lines were store bought, venhill i think?

Not wanting to waste good material as swarf on the shed floor I removed the bulk of material in one piece. Next is to get me a boring bar and remove the rest of the material out to the pencil line to fit over the hub

I have a question Jonesy, did you use your lathe to remove the billet from the center ?
If so what tool did you use cos i want one!
Title: Re: wire wheels
Post by: Jonesy :-) on July 09, 2015, 08:14:57 AM
Yeah Max, I used the lathe, with a 120 mm hole saw in the tail stock and running lathe at 60 rpm (slow as it goes) Took about an hour + of cutting time. Saw wasn't deep enough to go right through so had to turn billet around, re-true it and come in from both sides
Title: Re: wire wheels
Post by: makzy on July 10, 2015, 06:44:54 AM
Yeah thought you might have done that, i tried to shape a parting tool once to remove a 150mm center from a 19mm plate that i was making a pump flange out of.
Failed!! just wanted to save the center piece cos i'm a tightarse!!!

hmm, could be just what i need for a hubless trike,
or....rims for my wire wheel project, I've had these for about 20 years, sitting in a pile of useless handy junk under an old gum tree up the paddock, cleared away all the leaf litter and lo and behold 19" front rim and 18" rear, I think they were off an old GS 750 suzuki wrecker i had, that some ol mate wanted the hubs out of. Chrome is exceptionally good considering 20 years out in the elements and should polish up quite nicely. another piece of the jig saw comes together. I was originally going for new alloy rims but hadnt found exactly what I was looking for, and now these have presented themselves and cost me zilch.

Title: Re: wire wheels
Post by: Jonesy :-) on August 23, 2015, 09:29:53 PM
umm maybe I spoke (no pun intended) too soon, literally, in the cool light of day the chrome ain't as good as I thought, 50/50 chance the rims are still serviceable, but for a project, aesthetically they don't pass scrutiny.

If you have a chrome shop available, you can sandblast the old chrome off your old GS rims. Use aluminum oxide media (which will leave a blue looking jet trail when chrome is still present) and you can avoid the heavy expense of them trying to remove it. Some shops won't do it at all. Just my 2 cents worth.

Another piece of the jigsaw comes together, found a period XS 650 rear rim for less than 1/2 the price of the ebay one above.
Front rim sourced by Eddy at a swap meet (thanks mate) both require hydro blasting and polishing. front hub(s) got 2 now, one from Eddy's swap meet find and a NOS one from Ebay. Rear hub still a work in progress, if I can manage to string a few days in a row at home I'll be off to the local machine shop to get some machining done.

got another step done on the hub yesterday. Counter sinking the spoke holes.
Re-sharpened a drill to give it an almost square tip compared to normal one on the left to give the the holes an almost flat bottom
(https://xs1100.com.au/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimagizer.imageshack.us%2Fv2%2F640x480q90%2F922%2FNWC3Im.jpg&hash=f6877cd702bd9350093afa9de4a349f4a371f891)
Then substituted the axle with 20mm threaded bar and nut to act as a clamp while drilling. 36 individually lined up holes later the external countersinks were done. you can also see one of the three locking pins i did earlier. to prevent the awesome power of the XS spinning the adaptor on the hub
(https://xs1100.com.au/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimagizer.imageshack.us%2Fv2%2F640x480q90%2F923%2Fdq6uTl.jpg&hash=5ec8a904ba3a55bfb7e17ba67c86c4bdfa0fe438)
Next it gets interesting doing the internal countersinks.....................

start with a normal drill and reduce the shank, grind a new cutting edge, then cut off reduced shank section so its short enough to fit between spoke flanges. drill bit has to be removed and replaced in drill chuck for each hole (keyless chuck is a must for this job), run drill backwards and you have an inside back to front LH countersinking bit, simples.

P.S.

EDIT: oh yeah $36 includes a metre each of 3 & 4 mm "O" ring cord to replace the ones that caused steptoes clicky wheel

are the wheels being done somewhere kind of local as in Sydney or are you sending them further afield?

In sydney at Chris squires wheel repairs. Got a quote from a certain wheel repairer in qld that advertise in old bike australia but he was $300 dearer

Love the drill. Is the wheel restorer adding the spokes?
Title: Re: wire wheels
Post by: Jonesy :-) on February 06, 2017, 06:22:00 PM
Yeah Brett,
He's also hydro blasting the rims, and rolling out a small dent in the front rim. I settled for just a hydro-blast as it was going to cost an arm and a leg to get all the years of scratches and life on the road polished outo.  Chrisso won't have the only set of spoked wheels, but he'll have the shiniest

Well, these turned up on the eve of the rally, too late to get rubber fitted and muck around with spacing to suit the blue spots.
Since they left to go to the wheel lacer its been a pretty poor showing from him, and the couriers involved getting it back to me as far as customer service goes.
2 months in the guys shop and $500 over the verbal quote, they got sent back on 13th April, landed in Bathurst on the 14th and sat in a transport depot till the 4th May where i eventually tracked them down with no help from the courier company whose customer service is a name only. 5 ph calls and about an hour and a half in a "queue" with no result................still waiting for "the manager" to get back to me
end of rant.....

But as far as the workmanship goes, very happy.
tyres are now waitring at the bike shop to be fitted later this week when I can get them into town..............woo hoo

Just a bit of fiddling with the blue spot clearances
Bit of info for the technical boffins
Original wheel  & tyre (130/90/17) 655 mm diameter 2057 mm circumference
Spoked wheel & tyre (120/90/18) 665 mm diameter 2089 mm circumference, difference 2%

Sorry to burst your Wire Wheel Bubble and Secret, but the picture alongside the Standard was a doggy wasn't it, your real intention is to put them on the RH and be really unique and win one of your own trophy's.

I can see you're moving from the dark side (Standard) to the New side (RH), you're just not willing to Come out just yet, but that's O.K. we're all understanding type folk here (LOL). Ohhh maybe EXCESS.11 will get really jealous and never forgive you if that is the case? Over to you Jeff.

Cheers
Lou

back wheel fitted, front wheel is in mock up, no bolts in discs etc, Mal P's caliper carriers are going to need some machining, plus thicker spacers behind the discs. the spokes are wider than the mags at the point where calipers are. I'll have to do search on blue spots where all the spacing info and wheel differences are talked about.
