Id heard that story, yes I recall seeing it being wheelstood past the exchange hotel steps on many a Thursday evening too.
I got them off Dave B'man (the two bikes) and I do recall the first thing I did when I started re assembling was checking the headstock area for what I thought would be many many cracks and stuffed headset bearings.
I replaced them and all else is good. Ive been riding it as hard as possible whenever the chance arises and then touring sedately with the lady at other times.
Its a great old bus, good to have a little history with it.
The latest tin work I actually got from Peter S from Wang, and they were off was it Dave Mays ? (ulyssess member) bike.
So in a way Ive kept a few local bikes alive in some way!  Pity they arent still all running.
I know theres still one or two around though.
What happened to Ron L's after Crane sold it?? I really used to like the sound of the pipes on that bike, do you remember what they were? It was a 4 into 2 system

Hey Grant
I know your bike and rode with its original owner.Often we'd ride down to kurrajong heights pub have a couple of schooners and race back. The name "pebbles" came from when it got stolen and later recovered unhurt excetpt for rocks and gravel in the fuel tank....and then the name stuck.

Thanks, yes the paint looks great, the photos dont do it justice , but my mobile was all I had and hence the shots.
As for klm, its not the original speedo but I would estimate in the vicinity of 80000klm plus( really cant tell), the rebuild was only first oversize rings , the head on it was off the other bike and its had a full service /valve lap etc.
Electrics are reasonably solid. The electric start gets a bit iffy occaisionally, not sure why.
forks are in good nick and Konis on the rear.I replaced all wheel /frame bearings when I built it back up
The carbs are about to get a major going over again.
Whats interesting is the tick from the top end. Even after shimming, I think it just cam block wear, not too bad but you hear the tick.
I love the old thing, I joke its got a hinge in the middle somewhere after I get out on the Ducati and then jump on it! Tyre wear has been great , about 2 fronts to every rear is common for me.
You know I tried selling it about a year and a half ago and couldnt even get a looker, now Im really glad people were so silly not to buy it. It will stay with me now.
This site has certainly helped me too, it strikes me that this site has a great number of really like minded and really serious bike (XS) lovers of all kinds and Im yet to see any rubbish make its way onto the site which is very very refreshing!!
Anyway I will leave you all too it.
Keep the rubber side down as I hear people say!!
Grant

Looks awesome mate. Paint job looks fantastic.

I'm over seeing matte black XS's. A bit of colour goes a long way. How many Kms has the bike done?

I just took a couple of shots of my old pig. It has new livery after the cancer got to the original tank. The gent I got the tank /covers /seat from had just had them repainted and I think its in 80 model colours, but with a really nice pearl underlay colour  so the red is in real life a little candy.
The bike used to be all black so this colour is a real change and I like it.
Its been a local Lithgow area bike since new, wsa for some reason named "pebbles" ?? Kinda strange but I like the history.
A recent engine freshen, new clutch and good oils and we are good for another ???klm.
My partner loves being out on it , we leave the European bikes in the shed. I ride those at the track.
Anyway, if you see us out say hi.
