this came up on the UK forum a while back ( clicky ) , looks like the cush drive rubbers  should be OK.....

I went the cheaper option and it looks very original.
Just a spray can of VHT Gloss Quick Coat, it matches quite well.
Masked up the rim area and attacked the rest of it with a small art brush.

I was thinking of powder coating, my mates "mate" owns a business here somewhere.
It would of been easier to clean I suppose.

I've been to 2 places who say they either cant or wont skim the discs. I'll try one more engineering firm then give it a miss. I'll just swap over the discs when the time comes.

Hey FJR, what paint did you use on the wheels? I am in the process of getting my wheels painted and wasn't too sure of what to use. I am leaning toward a Black metal flake 2PAC paint rather than going with Powdercoat. Powdercoating would be easier as all they do is rub off the powder where the alloy needs to be left bare before they bake it. Not too sure how the heating process would react with the "Cush drive" though. Does anyone know what temperature is used in the Powdercoating process??

I managed to remove most of the corrosion and polished up the alloy parts.
I painted the "black bits" and it looks nice, well far better than it did before.

The black looks a lot better than it really is.

So next week I'll try and find a company that will skim the discs. If not I'll swap them out with the current ones on the bike.

Well today I replaced the bearings and only one seal on the front wheel. The other seal that goes onto the speedo side is a strange size. Couldn't sorce it, bugger.

So I'm going to strip the corrosion, polish the alloy parts and paint the "black" bits of the rim.
It will keep me off the streets for awhile.

I'll keep the wheel origional and forgo the powder coating.

Ken, personal opinion...go for the powder coating...it looks awesome and easy to clean. The alloy (unpainted) bits are easily sorted. After applying the powder, they just wipe off the areas that remain as alloy. Then they bake it!! My cam cover is powder coated...check it out.

I am going through this atm
I acquired a pair of itallic wheels to use on my XS
I intended to just clean them up and use them as is.......unfortunately, they are different colors..


so strip out the bearings, and get the paint stripper to work....




and polish the rims - I wont polish the edges of the spokes - too much maintenance


I have bought a Kill Rust black epoxy gloss and an etch primer.......and new bearings to complete the job - now which tyres?????

I have the swirly wheels and they were in reasonable shape when I got them, but had years of grime and a fair bit of corrosion.

I gave them a degreasing first, then used oven cleaner on 'em and then wire wool and dish liquid, then wire wool and autosol. They came up pretty good and underneath all the crud the gold paint seemed to have survived mostly.

The little nooks still harbour some crud, but a dremel would probably tackle those bits if I was really fussy.

The spokes have bare alloy edges and these were badly furred up/corroded. On these I used a really sharp paint scraper to scrape the alloy cleand and then 2 grades of wet n dry paper to shine them up.

Hi,

I've tried various methods of trying to remove the corrosion from the wheels, with no luck.
I think they are a bit too far gone. Lucky thing is that I have a spare set.

I'm thinking of doing up the spare set as in new seals and bearings and getting them powder coated.

I'd like them to have the original black / alloy original looking, but I don't think you can if you get them powder coated.

What have other members done ????
