Ah! It's all making sense now. Have you got any pics of the gearchange side of the bike? There's a couple of details i want to check against mine as I've got a different footpeg & gearshift setup to the Standards and the Sports and am wondering if yours is the same.

Here's a weird thing. The original photo of your bike that I could only partially see until you reposted it now shows in its entirety. Must be something wrong with my 'puter

Just been drooling over your pic again and noticed your bike hasn't got an oil cooler fitted. Did you get the bike in as a "Special order"  as I thought all the Oceanic model XS's came with them on. My 79 Special's got one though I don't know its history like you would yours.
I hope your taking extra precautions against gravel ingress into your sump these days, mate.
Hi eveready, I bought my ol'd girl when I was living in South Africa in 1983 (cost $500.00 with 3 kms on the clock!!)...there were heaps of them at the time. Only came out in 2 colours...red and chrome and black and chrome...non of them had oil coolers fitted although the mounting holes are there on the frame. I exported the bike to New Zealand and now here in Oz!! She has been with me longer than my "wife" and could tell a few stories if she could talk!!! Yeah, the gravel in the sump is still a complete mystery!!!
