hi mate,,  wouldn't be to worried bout the chain itself, a piece of wire holding it up so it won't drop in the motor will do;

what I WOULD WORRY about is loosening the cams themselves off evenly and the head bolts including the little ones front & back, to keep the head from twisting,, sounds dumb but it can be done

hey Jim,, haven't heard from in a while,,

I have found it much easier & less complicated to order a complete engine rebuild gasket kit,,, you'll get every single gasket,valve stem seals,fairly certain of half moons, bottom gasket,top cover,head gasket for the price of a single head gasket [can never have to many spares]

wouldn't worry bout your local dealer;; I deal direct with MAROOKA YAMAHA,,Bris,,[ google TEAM MOTO, then YAMAHA] or ring them and talk to GWILLAM[not a typo] in spares,,more than helpfull,,
   he's linked up to all sorts of sites all over the world

We should do a purchase from Partsnmore in Canada, not cheap with freight but.....
OR we could start looking around for a supplie, there are plenty around, just have to find the right one
http://www.partsnmore.net/cat_index.php?model=xs1100&category=x

Here is the gasket stuff

https://www.partsnmore.com/cat_index.php?model=xs1100&category=engine

We could do a bulk buy and the transport costs are less for what we get

Ordered some gaskets from my local ripoff merchants( yamaha dealer) to fix up oil leaks on head and cam cover. Mistake number 1. Was told they can't get the bottom cylinder gasket but this was not a problem as I didn't need that one, only wanted the top and cam cover and half moons. What turns up??? bottom and top cylinder gasket.. no cam cover or half moons.... :'( Any ideas who would have them? Part No's. 2H7-11193-00-00 & 1J7-11138-00-00   Any info many thanks. Being new years day makes it a pain as well
