That was my guess Bryan, so it must be possible to install wrong will have to go in and have a look, maybe install new clutch plates that came with the bike. All good down here but I could be up your way in a couple of weeks , will give you a call if I get there.
Will need to have a look through the book jonesy as yours seem to be right. I guess the spring is attached to the gear and that is on a splined shaft.
I haven't seen the setup before as none of my other have a kick start.

that wouldn't be from factory - I assume the motor has been apart and re-assembled not quite right....

how you doing anyway?

'78 kick start shaft

To all those with '78 and kick start option could you take the cover off the shaft and check position of the shaft.
Over the weekend I thought it might be fun to try and kick start one of these beasts but found the shaft seems to be in the wrong position due to the  flat on the shaft and the detent in the lever puts it in the forward horizontal position.
