Andy, mate, at the end of the day we wont think any less of your xs if it doesnt have self canselling blinkers  ;D
Like i said earlier they (self cansel blinkers) arent that good anyway, especially when they self cansel before the turn has even been made or sitting at an intersection and they stop before a gap in traffic lets you make your move

If you look at the pin configuration on the above schematic...you will see the orientation of the specific wires in the connector for the oem flasher can.
To make an after market non original 2 pin flasher work on the original wiring...some PO will have had to changed these connections over to suit the 2 pin unit .
Check and report as to whether the colours are correct as per manual...or...been swapped on the connector.
Correct me if i am wrong...but you originally stated you had a 2 pin flasher can in place...and the indicators worked but you had to cancel manually.
You then tried an aftermarket NON oem 3 pin flasher which didn t and will NOT work.
The wiring colours determine their functionality ...if they have been swapped over in the connector or cut and reconfigured in the loom wiring to suit a foreign/aftermarket they need to be reassigned as per manual along with using an OEM (working and tested) flasher can.

I followed all  the instructions I could and admitted where my shortcomings may have been. I went to see Eddy today and he, despite trying many combinations of working components could not get them to work. I apologise if I have appeared to be inept but am just trying to get things working.

That's what we do here, try to get things working.

Must be sure that the reed switch in the speedometer is connected and operating correctly first before you start pulling everything apart.

Regarding why self cancelling flashers are nt working......please....please follow ALL the troubleshooting tests as per the "specific" book pertaining to your model bike.
I actually bothered to scan relevant pages and post them in this topic.
Do NOT carry out half the tests and not the rest.
Do check the wiring loom has not been tampered with and ALL earthing points are cleaned AND then test proven as ok.
Do check that a PO has not reconfigured the 3 pin connector on the flasher can to suit a 2 pin one and then plug in an oem 3 pin unit and wonder why it does nt work.
If you don t know how to carry out tests correctly and what values to look for....find someone who does.

Andy...you can t just buy any old 3 pin flasher can ....it has to be the correct one suited to this bike.

See my previous post a few back, the circuit of the blinker unit is there. Must be the correct unit to work

Nah! The guy I bought it off said it had never worked while he had it.

I checked the voltages at the gauge end and they were as they should be. Where I think the connector plugs in just behind the tank (the connector is correct) the wires go to red and black. Doesn't make sense and I do not get the correct readings there.

Struggling a bit with the indicators. I bought a 3 prong flasher unit and all that did was to stop the indicators working at all. So back to cancelling them myself. Test 3(b) was OK I think, I am using a digital meter so I wasn't sure about the infinity thing (reading went to 1) but (c) was not. Could have been me being inept.

That's correct you need the original blinker unit for the canceller to work.
Here is an idea to be looked into for a different blinker unit.

Yet again guys thanks for your help.

I went through all the connectors I could see and blew out any crap with my compressor and then used a electrical contact cleaner.

The flasher unit (cylindrical) is a 2 pin and not the 3 pin as original. Would this mean that the self cancelling will not work?

How do I check which end of the fuel gauge circuit is not working, sender or the gauge itself?
