I’m with JEFF on this subject, years ago when I first got mine a lot of things didn’t work properly, and ofcourse I thought the worst, new this, new that, but a little investigation found a bit of corrosion here and there on plugs, terminals, EARTHS, switchblocks, eventually things started working well, I did go thru 3 left hand switchblocks before I got one to work ok,
So just a little time, patience, and TLC and attention to the little things that will bring on the joy.
Then again ya could rip it all out and spend shitloads of time and $s on heaps of modern up to date digital tech and feel quite proud of yourself having achieved the same results!
Hope I haven’t confused ya!

With the benefit of your advice amongst other things. I have investigated further.

I have a flasher unit (part number 1A0-8339503)  that has a 6 wire block connector that should deal with the self cancelling. I am assuming that if I get a new one my problem will be solved.

Any comments?

You need to give a full and comprehensive detail on what is standard and what is in working order and has been gone over and inspected by yourself so far.
Have you checked...removing ALL globes and the internal lampholder where they go is not corroded or rusty...check corrosion on centre contacts as well as the globes.
For what it s worth...replace ALL indicator globes ...working or not.
Have you done a continuity / ohms check for a good earth between all lampholders to the battery negative.
Have you removed the screw holding a number of ground wiring lugs at the regulator/rectifier and cleaned the thread into the frame as well as screw and connectors.
Have you done a voltage test across the battery ...before....and after starting.
Have you checked the alternator connector for poor contacts....cleaned all multipin as well as bullet connectors throughout the bike ?
The list goes on...the symptom you have may just be connections in the loom harness connectors that need cleaning for a good contact.
Have you checked battery voltage when motor is running.
Remove the switches on the handlebars and inspect and clean and lubricate where necessary.
Indicators notoriously play up with bad ground or undervoltage .
As a new owner don t assume all is well on these 40 yr old bikes...especially electrical connectors.
Open the head light shell and pull apart all connectors for inspection and cleaning.
Theres nothing to say you have a faulty component until all other parameters have been checked and maintainence has been carried out.
You may be surprised what you find and at the same time help prevent a breakdown whilst out riding.
Do you have the original flasher canister?

Personally
I did away with mine after it would self-cancel after 1 blink.
I removed the thumb sized black box mentioned earlier and now cancel manually like the rest of the motorcycling population.
the other bikes I have still work as designed but will not bother reinstating if the self cancel fails, I don't think its that good a system any way I find that sometimes it will stop blinking before I get to a turn anyway, maybe I start indicating to other motorists earlier or further from a corner than the "design" intended, then theirs the other issue of blinkers coming on by themselves and not self cancelling.
Your choice but the above is just my opinion on the blinkers

I have fitted the ST2 smart turn system unit to my rebuild (LED indicators not OEM) - I had a similar issue to Andy with the first unit and thought it may have been the switch - it was not, and I had a replacement unit sent by Smart Turn which has since worked without problem - that's me he mentions in this video - my momentary switch now works fine with different foam blocks - as Andy says, a fork in the road, or changing lanes may not cancel the indicators, but a touch of the momentary switch will, or the unit will time out and self cancel.
Anyway, I'm very happy with the unit - uncancelled blinkers are confusing for others and therefore dangerous - it's one less thing to think about.

the modulating brake light unit looks good too - it's next...

Speaking for  the standard models they worked off time and or distance.
The bike requires as well , the original 3 pin flasher can in working order with correct bulbs and wattages.
Generally over the years these have been got at and replaced with 2 pin flasher cans.

Yes, it was controlled by a little black box under the left side cover next to the battery about the size of your thumb + some other electrogizmetry

Was the XS ever fitted with self cancelling indicators?
