Not telling you to suck eggs.

Use tip cleaners to get EVERY hole, including the two in the bowl.

See the Steptoe post.

Next time you go past I will have a set in the dog trailer.

Bryan, will check but to be honest I'll be happy to get this pRoblem cHild running properly, let alone enhancing
Eddy, that's why i called you the other day when passing your home turf. So,since you weren't home I'll have to settle for cleaning the 541T out of these ones, literally.

Jones - while they are off, don't forget to match the manifolds to the head

So, i put a bottle of injector cleaner in about 10 litres of fuel. (6 X recommended strength) probably near a full tank for the Refuel Hourly model. Then went for a 50km run, on some of the long downhills I backed right off the throttle and pulled the choke on, theory was it would suck all the gremlin eating goodness of the injector cleaner through the choke and idle circuit, other times i rode along with a barely cracked open throttle to bring the idle & mixture screw circuit into play for more gremlin eating goodness. upon return to the shed it stalled at idle again, and as before restarted with a bit more than normal cranking time to idle perfectly? while still hot i bumped the idle up to 1500rpm and did the colour tune again after that i reduced idle to about 1000-1200 and re-did carbtune which was only fractionally out from last time. the odd thing was 1, 2 & 3 i couldn't induce an orange flame while colour tuning, the flame stayed blue even when when the mixture screw(s) were wound right in to bottoming out and all it did was pop and fart till wound out again till i thought the mixture screw might come out. no:4 however I could get an orange flame and adjust to blue and this is the only spark plug that isnt sooty. I also checked the vac advance was working by sucking on the line and all was good.
so it looks like the carbys are coming off for more cleaning..................this time when putting them back on I'll loosen the manifolds like makzy did so they can self center and maybe carbs will go on easier

Thanks Eddy, good to know, and much appreciated. I bought some injector cleaner this morning and will give it a run before re-colour tuning. I was going to say stay tuned but I wont.

To assist with your quest, I have a set or two of good Roundy carbs on the shelf. Also a couple of racks of RH parts carbies.
If you're passing by you can borrow to help eliminate.

That might fall between cleaning carbs and steptoe service,  but i really dont like unecssarily pulling one bike apart as its akin to opening a can of worms on these fragile old bikes, would rather swap with parts off the shelf.........a few things to try first..........think of the rec/reg drama :)

Sorry steptoe, your post came in while i was typing

Amongst your collection of bikes...can you take a known working set off...and install them to eliminate if it is fuel or electrical ?

Thanks makzy, so on my to do list are injector cleaner, re-do colour tune at 1500 rpm as advised off line by another member and if that all fails its off with the carby for a reclean, if that fails its carbys off to steptoe for the servicing of there life

Yeah I’m now going against my previous thoughts, although still worth checking because you can tune a carb to a weak spark.
Talking with my brother today about your problem and he’s positive that you have shit in the idle curcit, ie, idle jet, fuel and or air galeries, or even under your mixture screw.
He’s played with 5 XS 11’s now as well as z 13 and z1000  kwakers, 750 & 1000 suzies, triumphs, gussies, honda’s, and a sunbeam! So I respect his oppinion, BUT! I reserve the right to be wrong and corrected. ????

Keeps pointing to carbs in my mind. Try a good dose of injector cleaner if you don’t want to take them off again.
