So, i colourtuned to a blue flame just off orange, then synchro'd vacuum to even across all 4 carbs. Blipping the throttle had a crisp instant response. Took it for a ride but it was stuttering a bit when re applying the throttle to come out of a corner type scenario. A bit higher up in the rev range it was pretty much spot on. When i pulled up to a stop it stalled, but re started after a cranking for a little longer than normal, not instantly and idled nicely again. 1, 2 & 3 plugs are sooty while 4 looks ok. Any ideas on whats going on?

Oh yeah, sorry I just adapted this little stationery motor fuel tank to be an auxilliary fuel tank for tuning, uses the rear tank securing bolt hole, so good to go on any XS

So far, Ive done the colourtune thing and wound the idle up to about 1000 rpm and it seems to be sounding/running better........maybe thats all it needed? Brett, if you havent sent the coil yet, hang on to it, the coil I have maybe ok?

Ahh, a fire! We sit in front of one every night, summer or winter, it warms it soothes it inspires, and you don’t need to change channels! It helps me and my partner relax and discuss the day and the future, everyone should have one.

Christian, thanks for that confirmation.
Makzy, good idea, will do
Jeff, nah, no spare coil pack. I've been contemplating a set of green 3 ohm dyna coils for the " old girl" that i took to wellington this year, that would give me a spare set of coils for doing swaps...........hmm........ the seed is planted.

If ya gunna try swapping plug caps swap the plugs around as well. Plug & cap from 1 to 4 & vica versa, otherwise not a true test, plugs can fail too if they’ve been fouled too much so if the prob shifts from 1 to 4 try a new plug if that doesn’t work try a new cap if that doesn’t work burn it! After all is only an RH! ????

So, I moved No:1 plug to another cylinder but the sooty plug problem stayed at No:1
True or false
1. Can a coil die on one side/lead?
2. Exhaust backfire can be from unburnt fuel in exhaust igniting? (noticed intermittently on deceleration)
3. An over fueled cylinder would be wet not sooty?

Any other reasons for a misfiring cylinder or sooty plug and running only on 3 cylinders

Before I flipped the bike over to fix gearbox (with carbies on) it was running Ok

YES a coil CAN fail on one side, I had it happen to me proved on a coil tester.

Try swapping plug caps from 4 to 1, I’m with Evv & steptoe, plug caps have a certain resistance and when they go they just go! They’ve been the cause of many a frustration for me over the years. Dunno, worth a try.
