good news, sorted, ended up being carbs
took some time to rebuild the original 81 carbs,
with the problem  progressively getting worse over time and having learnt so much about worn carbs of late and nutting out how to fix them, I applied all that to my set
the bike hasn,t sounded like this for a good many yrs,

bloody carbs, if they're not right they can cause some grief

Has been put on hold until the Generals motor gets reassembled. There's already 2 motors torn down in the workshop and we're running out of room on the benches.

Hi Doug. No mate. It's just an ordinary small valve XS11 head.

I have been thinking about it a bit and coming up with bugger all...except, Does it have the YICS head on the bike? That can be a game changer in tuning for sure. I have a YICS tool I use when tuning an 81 as we had YICS here then. I usually just leave them in once I am done tuning the carbs and buy a new one. This is just a wild arse guess and a question as to when the YICS system was in place there.
78E, 79SF currently running and road ready.
1 more in the wings patiently waiting with a big bore kit already installed.

I was browsing through the manual and recall seeing a PRV valve....pressure relief valve...its actually on the oil pump...not up at the breather...sorry mislead. Thx for the correction.

Another check would be on the air fiter box that the tubes in there are all ok from where the crankcase breather hose connects into.

To state the obvious....you would want to see less leakage when the engine is hot because of better sealing due to expansion....as a cross check...do both a compression test as well as a leak down test both hot and cold.
