Thanks for the link for the pads guys. I now have a nice new set for the front end when it goes back to original specs plus a spare set hanging on the wall for a rainy day.
Managed to get over to Steptoes place today for a meet'n greet. Top bloke. We had the bikes parked side by side picking the differences. There's quite a lot of minor changes to the frame plus we've now established that there are at least 3 different factory front brake setups for the different models. The floating caliper as MelbXs & Petejw1966 & Steptoes RH's have got, the wierdo pivoting caliper as the original '79 SF came with, plus the standard's basic sliding caliper which I have on the front of mine at the moment, each of which have different fork slider castings to make things even more complicated.
I wonder why there was so much variation in design for a bike who's model run went for only 5 years?

Thanks Peter,
Here's some shots of what I'm dealing with here.

Caliper side view. Note mounting bolt through centre

Now the pads.....................

End view of pads shows angled pad  surface
They certainly are a different setup to what you've got.

I concur.

It's moving from an intro of himself to detailed hardware discussions.

Yes mate, that's them alright. Really wierd setup. Apparently Yamaha only put them on the 750 & 850 Specials that were marketed over here. They're the only ones Yamaha Australia have a listing for. Probably, they're the only reason I can get pads for it at all locally.

Hi Peter,
My caliper is mounted on a large cast lug on the rearside of the fork slider. It's got a single bolt which runs down parallel with the slider and the whole thing swivels on it as the pads wear etc. I'll try to find a pic of the setup. Main problem is that the pads are unique and I've tried a number of makes (brembo from Germany Included) to try to get a bit more stopping power out of them. I resorted to fitting 4 spot disc brakes on my trailer as the bike had very marginal braking at the best of times.

Thanks Peter, It's well on the way back to its former glory. Just got a quick question for you. Melbxs stated in his welcome that RH's had the rocking front brake calipers as well as the specials. the only ones I've seen so far have had the conventional type calipers. What type does yours have?

Gidday Bryan,
Yes the rear guard is stock. It's looks shorter than it is cos those S&W airsprings are about an inch longer than a normal XS shock plus the 16 inch wheel makes the gap even bigger. I'm currently running a 17" wheel off my spare bike to see if it affects consumption at all. It's dropped the revs at 100 k's by 700rpm so we'll see how it pans out. It's lost a bit of urge off the line but I don't encounter lines out here as often as I did in Brissie so it's not an issue for me. What is an issue at the moment is that my bike isn't as pretty as in the pics due to it sitting & deteriorating for nearly 18 months after I moved up here but I've now got the polish out and am really giving it the once over. At the moment I've taken the fairing, topbox, panniers & towbar off and am currently juggling the front forks to try to get my 3 piece bars back on so it looks more like in pic#1 again. It feels really good to be back in bike mode again after 3 years of property improvement mode.
                                                                                                                  Regards,
                                                                                                                     Errol

hello and welcome
bike looks great - is that rear guard shortened or is that the way your model came?
I had my forks straightened and re-chromed 10 years ago and they are still fine -
I will search out where and let you know
