Try this, mate -

BTW, his bike is an LH which was one of the latest XS11's, not an early one.  :P
Thanks, I thought he said it was a 79 model, maybe the engine is earlier, I noticed in the carby rebuild vid he was using an earlier set with the added bracket on the butterfly?
I have an early model & a late model & those parts are different.
He's also trying to run CV carbs with pods, our experience with later model bikes is that they wont run properly without the air box, does anyone else run pods successfully ?

So good o hear you are keeping the old  Girl alive That's the main Thing  :)
My thing is to get  the best GO off the line  :o( to show those other brands Yamaha Rules) and good economy when I am cruising 8) unlike most riders i like to blow people off at the lights and at my age I can do it part of the time  with the skills I have acquired over the Years  :)
This year there'll be 2 more back on the road.
We got them in box's, probably destined for the scrap yard eventually.
The internet has made it possible to get your hands on any parts needed from anywhere in the world & have them on your door step in a week or two.
There's a good series of videos on youtube of Andy's motorcycle Obsessions, he's done an early XS1100, nice job too, I'll have to back through them & see what exhaust system he used, looks & sounds nice, just what I'm after. Maybe he's on this forum ?

An easier way to add more Ooomph..... on take off..... is to alter/change the centrifugal advance .
I suppose the question to ask is.......what are you hoping to achieve regarding any modifications.
Also what sort of riding style and use ....do you plan to use your bike for ?.
We'll sort out the ignition timing when we get her going, we'll have to tinker around with tuning issues as we fine tune her.
All we are after is an easy to start reliable stock bike for occasional pleasure, no touring or long distance stuff. I'll probably muck around with riding position, seat & bars to make it a bit sporty, something for the road & track days.
Our grounding is mechanical & can't resist the urge to improve something that is there for the taking without losing reliability & costing a bomb.
The way these things are made there is a lot of room for hp increases before they are stressed somewhere.
We might very well end up back at the original cam timing mark but why not have a go, it costs me nothing & someone else does it for me to absolute perfection & they love doing it, everyone wins.

Hey Great stuff was that both Cams  adjusted ??
Yes both cams done the same amount.
If we find it goes like a dog we'll put it back to zero & see how it goes there.
It'd be nice to ask the engineer on the model what they actually did to satisfy the emissions controls but that'll never happen.
If she turns out better than expected I'll get it on a dyno & see what hp she's making & go from there.
The RGV leaves the workshop next weekend & then she'll be rolled in & put back together.
I got Dad a new bike lift bench so it'll be much easier to get things done now, he's 74 & too old to be rolling around on the floor of the garage.
Did a track day at Eastern Creek yesterday with the kids & now I'm busting to get the XS out there for a run, I'll be pushing hard to get her going asap.
I'll write back with what we find.
I have uploaded some pics of the engine to Photobucket but not sure what link to use to post on here? Do I just copy the address in the bar or is there another, I have other pictures saved in there & don't want all the world to share in them.

Hi just wondering what happened with the dialing in.
Degrees :-\
did you find out what standard settings are
We ended up with 8 deg, more than that was going to cause issues with the sprocket holes.
They elongated the existing.
The engine is finished & just waiting for the last project to be relocated to make room for the first of 2 XS 1100's.
The next one will sport a 1200cc kit as the cylinders are scored, any excuse really !
Hope to be riding the first one in a few months.

hey mate
below is the camshaft timing for my machine
bear in mind that the head has been flowed....

Tuning Data
18/6/2013
Valve Lash
   Inlet               Exhaust
1    0.21mm            0.22
2    0.18               0.21
3   0.17               0.24
4   0.16               0.24

New Cam Chain fitted
1978 XS1100 stock camshafts fitted
Cam Lobe Centres - at 1.0mm (40thou) Lift
INLET             Open    17deg ATDC
                      Close    48deg  BBDC
Lobe Centre            105

EXHAUST      Open   47deg  ABDC
         Close   16deg  ATDC
Lobe Centre      105

Do you know how many degrees the inlet was advanced  & did you do anything to the exhaust ?
From what I have read the inlet can be advanced by up to 10 degrees. I think we'll go about 6 to 8 degrees & see what happens, we can dial a bit out of it as we go along, no Dyno so it'll be done by feel at this stage.
If anyone knows any better I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks, I'll pass it on the man & see if he'll do it for me.
He'll whinge & grizzle about it but it'll be good exercise for his old brain, it keeps him young.
