Advancing the cam timing ?

Hi guy's, I had a talk to Steptoe the other day & he mentioned someone advanced the cam on their XS 1100.
We are just about to bolt up the engine after a full rebuild & I'd love to make that mod if possible.
I'm guessing it's an inlet cam mod to the sprocket holes, 3 - 4 deg?
I asked around & it was confirmed that in those early days of pollution controls the inlet cam was retarded for better emissions output & also quietened the engine down.
I' also imagine some sort of dowel or keying was used to secure it so not to slip?
I dropped off the last seal & ordered the last 4 shims today & we can do the cam mod before she goes back together this weekend if I can get the results of your hard work & experimentation.
I saw the dyno sheets on this forum the other day & I think it was for the bike that was done but I can't find it again !!
Regards Mitchell
