Also plan to re-paint and airbrush the tank soon. Probably similar to how it was. I love that gold metallic. and the giant spidey.

Cheers. Got a new camera ; 16 mp vs 8 with the old one. Got the new switch on yesterday. Fiddly damn mounting system with the modded headlights bracket. And speedo. Im good at pulling things apart but re-assmebly?? hmmm... Next plan is to buy a Tacho and make an alloy mounting bracket/s to go above speedo. Any ideas where I can get a tacho --with a diameter of 100 mm or less, that reads to 9,000 rpm. XS1100's red line at 8,500 I think. ( dodgy gear changes excepted lol...) Will post pic shortly.

All good, connected up to new switch-- minus white wire. Bike starts. Lights work although the headlights are dodgy between Hi and low. But thats a L/H switch block problem and I have a new hi- low switch to fit ( Thanks for that Eddy..).. New set of stainless headlite mounting and adjusting bolts to come.

Evereadys call to swap out the bottom contact plate is a good one if you can find a good secondhand one that is missing it s key ....it takes away your concerns and replaces what was there.
The ignition switch is all "positive switched" connections ....the only time you would have an immediate short would be if you directly switched a positive directly to a negative connection....with out any load inbetween.
As I said........as there is no definite history on the loom and no way of knowing for sure what the white wire was controlling.........it s only a guess according to wiring diags ....anything could of been altered over the years.
Having said that.........what positive wires you switch..... are just as important...... so as not to switch the wrong combination and get the ignition out of sequence to it s switch position and or load on cable size and fuse rating.
In your instance ....you should be ok with the switch you have either way..........but....the litmus test is when you turn that switch..

Thanks. you see where im coming from. BTW, I have no instument lighting anyway. My Speedo's never had a light. All I have is a speedo. No tach. If you scroll down a bit you see the pics of the XS.. Im happy to pay someone to connect the new ignition switch. I could do it myself without the white wire but bugger me??.

Yes...... the bike s ignition will work with just the 3 colors you mentioned.
But logically something else will not work as it used to ....if you leave the white wire off.
Not having any definite history of what wiring loom your bike is off........or if it has been altered or chopped up by PO s....a rough guess is that the white wire was operating the instrument lighting.
Connect the Blue , Red and Brown wires and simply see what isn t working as it used to......ie.......the instrument lights.
If your not confident........take it to someone who is.

I have a brand new switch. The old one's contact plate had the wires coming off the solder----as in broken---------------- on the contact plate. -----its cactus.   . Thats the reason for the new switch. MY question IS... The bikes wires are 4. ( Red, Blue, and brown.and white)   The wiring from the new switch is only red, blue and brown. .

Quote - "Rather than pull the new switch apart, can I not connect it to the bikes wiring ( less the white wire)"

Quite frankly, I wouldn't and didn't as you can see from my photo of my discarded switch plate that I didn't try to use on my bike due to the different configuration (and I'm quite open to experiment with electrical stuff). It's just not worth the risk.

There's much less risk involved in simply undoing the 2 screws holding the bottom plate up under the switch and swapping the plates over.

Rather than pull the new switch apart, can I not connect it to the bikes wiring ( less the white wire). See pic of new switch--which only has red, blue and brown . Bikes wiring is red, blue, brown and WHITE.
