ring compression is easy with a second person,,
1 person pushes the centre of the ring with a small flat blade screwdriver and does the tapping down,, {with the palm of the hand, not a sledge hammer}
the other person uses 2 flat blade screwdrivers to hold the ring ends in, about 1 1/2 cm from the ends

BE VERY VERY CAREFUL when you do the fine rings of the oil ring

it gets a bit tricky towards the last rings on the last 2 pistons but gently gently does the job

if you start with 2 and 3 at the top of stroke, have a tightly rolled rag under 1 and 4  to hold them square and still, until all rings on all 4 pots are in then pull rag out carefully

Hey Jazz,
That looks like a good comprehensive kit, and a good price, I payed more than double that just for a genuine head gasket. As far as getting the rings back into the cylinders you'll notice the leading edge into the cylinder has a slight bevel to enable fitting over the rings. Personally I've never used a "ring compressor" but patiently squeezed each individual ring as it goes in. Set the crank/pistons so 2 are up and 2 are down. and with a slight slope in the barrels from 1 to 4 across the bike you shouldn't have to be trying to do 2 rings on different pistons at the same time

well i did it the head and bores are off it sounded and looked harder then it was, there was a brake in the gasket where the oil was leaking. I'm thinking that some one was there before me. Now I'm looking at gasket kits, I'll do the valve stem seals while im in there. This is the kit I'm think of getting http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/181600275726?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

also when i am putting it back together what is the best way to compress the rings as i put the pistons back in the pots?

if taking cylinder head off, main drama is getting cams positioned and re-timed when putting it back on, best have handy pages 66 to 70 to follow from the clymer manual of lies,  tip is always keep camchain taut on the crankshaft sprocket when fiddling the cam sprockets, other tip is beware loosening cam-cap nuts flying off down into the sump...

Jazz...............i hope your leak "is" just a gasket.........some people have reported there being a crack in the vicinity your talking about...so check it out thoroughly once you have it off.

it's been a while since i have been out playing with the new bike, but having some time this weekend i thought it was best i get my backside in to gear and at lest start it up. After doing this i found my new tank has a leak from the sender unit ( no big deal it's just a gasket), but the head gasket is leaking from under the chain tensioner. i removed the tensioner and cleaned it resealed and put it back together cleaned the oil around the head and chain tensioner and put some powder all over the front of the motor to see if it still leaked. when i started it up it is clear there is a leak from the head and not the tensioner.
so it looks like i will be pulling the head off and replacing the gasket :( . while I'm in there apart for checking the shims and chain guides and replacing the gasket is the any think more i should do? are there better gaskets then others? where should i shop?. i plan on removing the head with the motor in the frame is there any tips i should know about?
cheers Jazz

If memory serves me correct.....this tank was an "extra"that was offered along with the sale of a pristine xs1100 standard with a vetter style fairing....many years ago in the USA..
it might pay to ask the seller if it is the 20 ltr usa version tank....or the 24 ltr euro/asia pacific tank.

These tanks don t come up that often and if they do they normally come attached to a bike as well. Internal rust is usually the demon you have to battle if coming across a 36 yr old tank. The tank I showed you is "new" the seller claims....the pic shows some cosmetic scratches/marks.....which is reasonable to expect given its age. I don t think you ll see another on offer in this condition in the near future ....if at all. When you consider the asking price and postage its not cheap ....but you are talking about an item in this condition that is "the proverbial hens teeth or rocking horse poo........compared to a second hand tank you would most likely have to deal with internal rust with a laborious task of removing and attempting to coat internally with a tank liner kit all at extra time and cost.
Keep in mind this new tank does nt appear to have a filler cap or fuel taps....although...these are more readily available secondhand than the tank itself.
