Glad we got that sorted and you did n t have to buy another rec/reg unit.
To Improve electrics/voltage drop all over the bike it would n t hurt to properly clean all connections .....by what ever method you can.
It only takes a dirty or loose fitting connector ..... to drop those volts away........resulting in poorer performance.
Definitely carry out the tests on the field and stator windings whilst at the same time checking you have good clean connections and proper tension when plugged together.

Many Thanks for info, I checked voltmeter on car I found a dodgy battery in the voltmeter was giving me wrong readings so replaced and hey presto. Of all the things I missed the most important thats the first over donkeys years of using.

Now the donor reg is OK tested that on resto bike shows around 12.8 on idle and up to 13.8 at 2000rpm and stays there until throttle off. Then back to 12.8v.

So I replaced the known good reg onto  my bike. Tested battery around 12.6 volts then started it and it dropped to 12.4 ,at 2000rpm it struggled to 13.5 no more. With headlights on it dropped to 11.9 volts.

So with a known good regulator, should I first look at alternator or at least give it a clean as Ive never had to look in that area before so do not know what state its in.

Here s 2  tables of results you should be looking for.....as well as a set of tests for the stator and field coil windings..

Hi jeff yes Ive checked and cleaned all screws and contacts and even ran a seperate earth from reg to battery. Will check out digital volt meter on car as youve suggested. I also checked ohms as per book and in one direction they all respond with reading much the same but when you reverse the test I got nothing.

I checked the reg off resto bike again and across the battery running at idle it was higher up to 18volts this is the first time Ive started the bike [this was the one I replaced to check the dodgy one] But I'll check voltmeter in the morning as I have noticed low battery light has come on. I also have replaced old cooked battery with a new sealed one so the should be ok in that department.I'll let you know how things go Coops

Coops..........with your tester on the battery terminals....what readings do you get with ....
1) Motor and ignition off
2) Motor at idle
3) Motor at 2000 rpm
4) Motor at idle with headlight turned on
The issue I have is that 2 separate reg /rectifier units are performing the same way from what you ve reported so far....... and 16.5v is too high.
Have you cleaned the thread of the screw that holds the 2 ring connector wiring lugs that attach to the reg/rec...also the thread in the frame and the top of the heatsink where they touch the unit ?
Have you carried out the tests as per book on the unit ?
What are you using to test voltages ?.....is it an analogue or digital meter ..can you test it on your car battery to see what your getting as a reading ......just 2 readings...........with motor off and engine idling for the car will be ok.....to verify your tester.
Get back to us with all readings for all of the above tests .

Coops,

Can you borrow a known good regulator rectifier from a SA buddy?

Hi can someone point me somewhere Just replaced battery with new one as old one got cooked a little with overcharging. Checked with volt meter and got 17volts plus.

So swapped regulator with another which is OK and getting same reading. It drops a little to around 16.5  at idle but a think its still to high and I dont want to cook new battery. Ive checked earthing from Reg  and also put extra earth lead from regulator to neg on battery and checked all earth points and cleaned them all OK. Nothing has changed still getting a slightly high reading. Both Regs are of similar vintage or should I buy a new one and go from there. Coops
