and the fill stud in the diff is stuck so bringing the oxy back tomorrow.
Just take a chisel and give it a shot straight down to make a good groove in the plug. Then take and give it a shot, using that groove to plant your chisel in, in the direction to loosen it. I bet that with one whack down and two whacks in a counterclockwise direction will loosen it enough to easily remove it. Worth a try.
78E, 79SF currently running and road ready.

Headlight light had me stuffed as I assumed it came on when the headlight was on, but no it comes on when the headlight fails.I would have thought it was obvious enough that you have no headlight, without having another light to tell you that you cant see where you are riding.
Actually, if this light is on, it's telling you that one of your headlight filaments has failed and that the unit has selected the other beam to keep the light lit. If low beam is out, it'll stay on high beam, but at reduced output, if high beam, it'll stay on low beam. You won't be stuck in the dark with this setup. Techy stuff for its day!

Sounds like you've had a busy time of it with the bike so far, though, so congrats on your progress, mate.

Yes its running. Tuned it today and its playing ball at this stage. Really used the carb balance tool to flatten them all out and it idles quite well now. I set the idle screw at 50% and then got the rest by moving the timing. I used a timing light but not sure if its supposed to be on 5 or 10degrees. Its around there but I did the final adjustment by ear. I did the same across the idle screws and its good. Its within my range of acceptability anyway which is the main thing.
Have machined the head and valve seats, all new valves, reshimmed it twice, new plugs, leads and dyna coils. New pick up coil. Replaced a carb body and put two new carby kits in. Repaired all the damage to the loom, new rear blinkers and switches. Removed fall over, kill switch and ballast resistor and replaced oil cooler hose. New speedo and the tacho still doesnt work. Apart from that all the electricals are good. Headlight light had me stuffed as I assumed it came on when the headlight was on, but no it comes on when the headlight fails.I would have thought it was obvious enough that you have no headlight, without having another light to tell you that you cant see where you are riding. On the other hand you dont really need a small light on the dash to tell you your headlight is on do you? This quandry got so bad that I ended up reading the manual and had to reinstall some wires. Still got a small oil leak at the filter and the fill stud in the diff is stuck so bringing the oxy back tomorrow.
Dont get too excited about pics Ed as its original and the black paint is half off the motor so it looks like a wreck. Aiming to get it to the rally.

Hey HMC,

I don't need the carb body back I have a spare or three.  perhaps you could pass it on to some one who needs a #2 body.

How is the build going?

I'ts gotta be close?

Looking forward to seeing pics

I have been looking for these carbs and they are few and far between. I got one body from Ed but have since secured a set from SA by chance. ( Ed if your reading this, I will return it if the set turns up as described)
I got a set from Barry in SA 0407187634. Not sure if he has any carbs left but he has a load of xs stuff. I may have a 1,3 and 4 spare depending on how the surgery goes.

Anyone with a set of carbs they want to part with? or at least the bodies for 1,2 and 3.
Mine have the air/fuel/idle adjustment screw tip broken off in them!
