and so the sorry tale that started in october last year ends. Christian got me an OEM replacement (thanks Christian very much appreciated) that makes 14.3v at idle and 14.6v just above idle and beyond. the old bike finally got to put her clothes on and now looks much less folorn now the tank seat and sidecovers arent scattered around the shed.

I sent the replacement unit to Christian (AKA someone who knows how to test electrical things) and it didn't quite measure up as well as blowing Christians bikes main fuse when installed so a seller beware message was sent.
If you are looking to buy a regulator give me a buzz first so you can avoid this product.

copy of email to seller

"we recently had dealings where you sent me a regulator that instantly went up in smoke, you then replaced it and the 2nd unit was tested and did not come up with acceptable results compared to an OEM unit. Regardless the unit was plugged into a second bike that was running perfectly well with a properly functioning charging system, as soon as the key was turned on it blew the main fuse. Another issue was the regulator did not fit without trimming some material off the edge of the adjacent reserve lighting unit.
I would suggest you refrain from advertising it as a compatible replacement for the XS1100 rectifier regulator
regards"

Dam Jonesy, I saw all the fancy electrical notes and wondered how the hell you learnt to use one of those magical digital things so I read the whole sorry tale again.
You are a stubborn bugger aren't you  ::)
Have you found a new source for rec/reg ?

reply from seller.

We really don't know what to say we are selling this for quite some time and haven't had problem if you want we would refund your payment and you don't need to send the regulator back.

letter to the seller......subtle enough?

the replacement arrived, thanks
the XS110 forum I'm a member of suggested testing this replacement unit after the first one went up in smoke and the results are below, as you can see the results are very different from a known good OEM unit and I suspect this replacement will go up in smoke too
what are your recommendations?
I have now paid postage for 2 units. possibly both faulty. Are you agreeable to pay postage on a 3rd unit with a test certificate?
I have omitted your seller name during discussions on the forum out of common decency and hope we can resolve this in a decent and honest fashion.

I'd definitely not be hooking it up to the power, mate. The forum's electrical whizz's should be able to get a better read on the numbers, but it looks bad how I read them.
I'd be getting in touch with the seller again and showing him your readings, especially the ones from the OEM unit, and see if they might have a good one they can send you.
Also might pay to mention that you're a member on an international motorcycle forum and your problem is currently being discussed in depth, but you haven't as yet named the supplier of your faulty goods?? ( a bit of a nudge in the ribs does them good sometimes)

A bit more testing and comparing to my good OEM rec/reg

test                   Ebay unit                                Good OEM
               pos-neg         neg-pos             pos-neg         neg-pos

B1-W      26.2              0.67                  8.0                 OL
B1-B2     34.2            35.9                    18.6                OL
U-G1      26.6               0.72                  8.9                OL
V-G1      27.6               0.73                  6.8                OL
W-G1     27.1               0.68                10.2                OL
B1-G1    28.6               3.98                18.4                OL
B2-G1      0.42Kohm     0.42Kohm        2.7Kohm        2.7Kohm

OL on my meter is what comes up when red and black probes aren't touching anything
are the red numbers a potential outlet for the smoke?
All numbers are Mohms except for the B2-G1results.
I have a feeling I shouldnt be installing the ebay unit?

righto the new unit has arrived and like I was told to do, I checked with a meter first
can the brains trust give the go ahead to connect and turn on the key based on the figures below
might have been a typo in the book where it says in test h. to check resistance between B and G1,
so I hedged my bets and tested B1 and G1 + B2 and G1 as can be seen in the small print at the bottom of the results
Is test d. B1 and B2 cause for concern? similar resistance with the leads either way around.
these measurements were done on the bench.....no power any where near it

excellent idea WATSON, does that mean our  trophies are becoming more complicated than intricate ::) :-\

Maaaayte......don t we all wish we lived in that hoity toity land of "sales" speak.
When I hear that term "PLUG AND PLAY".....my eyes rotate fully...... giving me an inward view .......of where "brains" SHOULD have been located with the person who concocted that term..... in their cocoon.... in their "perfect world".
You would think that any manufacturer would test their product with quality control checks or any self respecting chef would taste the food they serve or people carrying out their work would give half a shit at least half of the time........
Trouble is...........sometimes it s  just a means to a paycheck or it s someone else s fault .....or they don t give a shit.......and have got their money off you.... and it s your fault for not checking what they should of checked .
That s why the same person invented the term "SHIT HAPPENS"  ;D
That term should be renamed....."PLUG AND PAY". :P

I was about to suggest just that.
Before you plug it put a post up with a picture so it can be discussed at length
Maybe Scotty could do the preamble

Before you connect the replacement unit being sent.......carry out all the tests as per book/s .....that you have previously done on the now mountainous pile of reg /rec units .....on the new unit  ;)
