Interesting stuff about the octane levels in the fuel.

I use 98 in both bikes.

The E  has had considerable head work (ported and polished, bigger valves etc) and has an 1196 big bore kit with a standard pipe.  never misses a beat.

The RH is standard and well worn, used daily, again never misses a beat , however I do need to regularly change the plugs as they "foul" up.  Not sure weather it's from the fuel or something else. This one runs a pipeline 4-1 power pipe.

I'm gomnna switch to 91 and see if that does anything?????????????

Although I wasn't clear about the octane rating comment - the point is not to use the 98 option
as it contains some additive that will foul ones plugs......
thats what my guru says anyhoo....

Brett, for a standard motor, good ol normal 91 ron unleaded will do fine. I run that in mine. Steptoe's got a wiseco 1179 kit in his and he also uses plain 91 unleaded. Bryans bike also runs a big bore kit (1196?) but also has head work done and is is a much higher state of tune than a stocker, hence the recommendation to run the higher rated fuel to help prevent detonation.

Cheers Bryan, Fuel choice would be a desirable bit of info as well. I also usually use 95 octane.
I found some interesting information on motor enhancement last night.  I will post up the bulk of it elsewere for consideration discussion but this excerpt would be interesting here. Seems I have some to learn about fuels  ??? It might explain why I found my Holden Frontera to get better fuel economy on the 91 octane than the higher.

Finally, it should be noted that low octane fuels burn faster than high octane.  It's a common misconception that octane is some measurement of power.  It's not.  Octane is technically a molecule, but it's commonly used as a word to describe a fuel's resistance to ignition.  That's right; higher octane fuels don't catch fire as well as low octane fuels.  Honda's famous RC166 bike required the use of 87 octane fuel in order to reach its redline of 18,500 RPM.  For more "streetable" motors, it's better to opt with higher compression and higher octane fuel as the increase in torque in the lower RPMs is usually more desirable than a few extra turns of the crankshaft at the redline.

well now....I gassed up this morning having gone to reserve at 303km.... ;D
I filled the tank as per usual adding some 19.83 litres......
thats 15.28 km/litre or 6.54 litres/100km
so I would appear to have around 4 litres in reserve....
those kms were done in  basically commuting mode... things are quite different when I am under it..
BTW my mechanic no 2 son has instructed me to use only 95 fuel

So that would be about 7.1L per 100Km to 11L per 100Km

Hey Bretts,

I've got an 1179 Kit in mine with a 4 - 1 set of pipes and standard jets.

If I just poke along :( I get about 14klm/ltr.

However on more spirited rides ;D ;D ;D ;D that drops to about 9 or 10klm/ltr.

The thread will be a couple of years old now, but somewhere in this Forum this was discussed at length.

I often have trouble finding the official and general Fuel economy for the XS so I have purposely titled this thread so Google searches may find it.
When I first got the XS1100 I was a bit frustrated with how much fuel it was digesting. It was in the 9+ per 100km open highway cruising. Since then I have swapped over to the larger 24L tank and fitted a XJR exhaust that doesn't leak. The distance I could travel between refills obviously increased and I also thought the mileage had improved as well.
Today I managed to get a decently accurate L per 100Km measurement. Although no speedo to log exact Km Parkes to Young via Eugowra is 161km after filling in Parkes it took another 12.6L in Young. That makes 7.8 L per 100Km if my workings are correct?
I think that is pretty close to the production specs but would like others to clarify and list what they are getting.
