even on the longest, most demanding trip,,7500klm 4 up {outfit with mum and 2 kids } and trailer, carried the 5 size spanners we need and the same in sockets, some electrical paraphenalia and a pen soldering iron,  a couple of screw drivers, an air compressor and jammed in a corner under the rags is a bit of luck if all else fails,,

apart from a clutch cable last year, I,ve never needed any of it,,,,,, BECAUSE I RIDE AN XS 1100 :D :D :D :D :D

Here's my "essentials" for big days out.
Spare throttle, clutch and speedo cables, plus a universal cable repair kit (you never know who you'll see stranded on the side of the road and it's nice to be able to help out), 2 packs of fuses, spark plugs, which are typically the set I've just taken out of the motor prior to the trip, test light, insulation tape, spare headlight bulb and ballast, and a can of Finilec stuff for my tubeless tyres.
Plus my XSIVE electrical rescue kit which holds my pickup coil assembly, TCI unit, reg/ rectifier and some smaller items.
Having replaced and lubed the hell out of my tailshaft recently, I don't think it's liable to fail on me in the near future, but I have just pulled the uni joint off my spare bike and popped it into the box too.
One new addition to my tools I carry is a tube of Quicksteel metal putty. On last years run, I ran over something that flicked up and really hit the bike so hard that I immediately pulled over to make sure it hadn't smashed any of the engine cases. All looked good so I continued on. After the rally, I went to give the bike an oil change and found that the oil filter housing bolt had its head half sheared off. I hate to think what could've happened if it had hit a couple of centimetres either side of the bolt, hence the putty.
And since my bike uses a bit of oil, I normally carry a 5 litre container with me for more $$$$ concious top ups on the road, which would do for a total refill if I holed the cases.

Never been in the boyscouts but their motto kinda fits me.

That's food for thought, well done for bringing it up.

On trips I've done in the past I generally carry extra tools, tyre levers, spare tubes, throttle or clutch cable, rubber mallet and fuses & elec wiring, plus multi meter, crimping tool, spare spark plugs and T handle plug spanner.

I've never had a spare tail shaft to even consider carrying one.  I think you're right though it will be interesting to see what things blokes carry.

Cheers

Just wondering what sort of spares you blokes carry when on an extended trip such as bourke or phillip island(going this year) when its a bit too far away to get someone to come and pick you and the bike up.
I've got a spare tail shaft that goes in the bottom of the saddle bag and a complete plug n play pick up coil assembly that lives in the tank bag. be interesting to see what spares might be able to help a mate out at the next gathering

EDIT
after reading Paul's reply I've got a full set of cables and vacuum caps for the inlet manifolds too
