Thanks Errol....got new kits cause boot on RH side is shagged anyway..$43 for  2 x sets on eBay....can't complain. Took em apart and RH piston really tight and lots of crap around it. Oil left in bores was Black and sludgy...will clean all up replace seals and boots...new pads, brake lines and fluid..will finally be able to stop the old elephant with some confidence...Cheers

Actually, Alice, in 95% of cases of caliper rebuilds, new seals aren't needed as they don't seem to wear out, but are replaced just as a matter of course. (just saying, as they are sometimes hard to obtain)
Mostly, it's just a case of popping the piston out and cleaning every thing up meticulously as Jeff described previously, paying particular attention to the ring groove on the piston, and unless the seals have been visibly chewed out, just refit them in their slot and slip them back in.

While you have them off the bike........disassemble them completely and clean all the parts.Once the piston is out you can remove the inner seals..........and clean in the grooves where they sit.Check the pistons for and corrosion where the seals meet and travel when braking.Push through the dowel where the mounting bolt goes through......and clean out the inside of the rubber boot/ grommets.......then add plenty of rubber grease inside the dowel boot and reassemble................the dowel should slide freely from side to side to allow the caliper to centre over the disc when braking.
Don t use petro chemical cleaners on any rubber parts when cleaning.

Hey alice
your photo didn't work (not on my puter anyway)but from what you describe if it aint leaking leave it alone, I think you might be talking about the rubber boot/seal that is sort of like a bellow that is held by a wire clip on the caliper and fits into a groove on the piston? yes?
this an easy one to replace by yourself without doing a rebuild. its only a dust seal to protect the real piston seal from the elements

Brake Calliper Boot

I have just removed my brake callipers after my last post about fork oil on my brake pads and found the calliper and boot looks odd...see photo. The RH side boot..the one that got all the oil....is out of shape. opened up and a bit crook looking. It does not leak oil as far as I can tell. Do I need to rebuild the calliper or just replace the boot and can I do it myself? Thanks in advance for any comments...
