Clutch replacement +
« Reply #1 on: January 23, 2013, 09:23:48 PM »
I have spent the last couple of days replacing the clutch, yes ok it took me much longer than needed and it all became a little of a shambles. But In the end I was very happy how it all came together.
Checking the parts that came out they were all in spec. Friction plates 3mm, springs 42mm and all but 1 of the steel plates was dead straight. The friction plates did seem to be glazed and I was keen to start fresh with the new set of friction plates, springs and 4 steel plates. I also sanded the black stuff of the old steel plates.
I had some conflicting advice on whether I needed to remove the exhaust to get the oil filter out but to be on the safe side I did remove. Since removing it does seem that I could have just yanked the bolt out/pushed the oil filter casing up and then just slid it out without removing the exhaust but all part of the learning curve hey  8)
I had ordered some exhaust gaskets but after removing the exhaust I saw no gaskets  :o The aftermarket exhaust seemed to have a taper that just slipped in without any gasket.
It is all back together now and as I had been unsuccessful in repairing a leak in the gear box I decided to try a sickaflex repair for the short term. I am confident in this but time will tell.
I also received in the mail the new drag bar handle bar. I thought this was a great compromise to the clipons but after a short ride I am not sure I am keen. All my weight was on my hands instead of my bum and I kinda liked leaning back in the seat as I came out of the corner.
It also causes issues for setting the clutch cable accelerator cable. I was not that worried about modifying these things but it was a bit of a pain when I just wanted to try the new bars. In the end after the work on the clutch assembly was done and I had snapped the clutch lever trying to modify it. I found the clutch cable was now stuffed. I fitted a clutch lever from a cheap little import bike and am waiting for a new clutch cable to arrive at the local bike shop.
I have been looking at after market clutch levers to change the angle of the cable exit and maybe an improvement in performance (dam they are expensive) but I think I will go back to the original bars for now and go back to the drawing board on custom bars?

Edit I used Penrite HPR30 which was a recomended mineral oil. We don't need to mention that I tipped 2 litres of the oil that I had the friction plates soaking in before I decided to put the sump plug back in, God dam that is the first time I have ever done that  :-[
