Hi Fred,

Yeah I dont know what I was thinking when I started to take apart the factory wiring. This is the progress pic at the moment - doesnt look any different. All wires have been cut and labelled, so Im slowly soldering the connections and hopefully it would be neater. Gonna head off and see if I can source some parts at auto shops.

Trivia - Each wire I cut I labelled both ends. At the moment, Im up to number 40 which means Ive cut 40 wires so far.  :o

I went with the same option as Errol: Function.

It's never let me down.

Thanks Eveready,

Yes, the carbs are complete. I will definitely get the repco sold fuse box then for all fuses including for the main fuse from the battery.

Means I can hopefully get her fired up this week since all my parts are here locally.

Here's the wiring that Im working with at the moment. It complete, but all jumbled and tangled. So I am tidying it up, soldering it and hopefully give it a neater look. Plus I get to check all connections and ensure there is no wires that go no where.

G'day, mate.

Btw can anyone give a clear answer on whether 78-79 model carbys can be used on 80's model engine?

Yes, no problem at all. Is that straight enough?

The carbs can be swapped from year to year so long as it is the whole bank of carbs. It's when you start to try to swap inner bits that the dramas start. The early carbs (I reckon) are the better as the mid-later ones have different metering relating to the detuning of the motors slightly, and the late-later ones have sealed mixture screws for emission control purposes.

Regarding the fuse box question, I asked the same thing from the repco fella I bought mine through. He said that the majority of these spade type fuse boxes would be fine up to 50 amps. It's the wire size that's used to connect them that is the limiting factor with them.
I opted for just a straight 4 fuse one for my bike.

Doesn't look as nice as an original, but it's never left me in the dark since I fitted it, and that's what I was aiming for.. Functionality over form.

Just got back from automotive store to pick up some carby cleaner and electrical tape. Whilst there, I saw these 2 items - a fuse box and a fuse holder.

Can they be used as a substitute or replacement?

I know the main fuse holders are rated at 30A. The fuse box, on the other hand, has no rating on max amperage. It just has outlets for each fuse.

Also, I see on the wiring diagram that my neutral wire (baby blue) goes from the pick up coils to the neutral bulb on the dash. With mine, I cant seem to locate where or what the switch looks like. Any ideas?

Mate,
The light blue wire from the pick up coils goes to a philips head screw on the neutral switch right next to the front pivot arm of the gear lever, you'll have to get down on your hands and knees to see it

7 day turnaround is quite respectable for the distance. I rarely buy anything from overseas but may make an exception with small items like these.

Have a pic of what your inline fuses look like?

The question is did you keep all 4 or did you send two back?

If you kept them do you have one to sell?

I need one also as mine died some years ago and I made up some in-line replacements, however they don't look original even tho they work fine.

I originally ordered two, after 4 weeks they had not turned up so I contacted the seller to ask WTF.  He said he had posted them on the same day I had ordered them.  He posted me two more no questions asked and these I had  within the week. Two weeks later the original 2 turned up (postmarked the same day I ordered them)  So a trustworthy seller let down by the mail service.... It happens

So the short answer is:   about 7 days depending on the post.

Cheers

Thanks Eddy. Do you recall how long it took to ship from the UK?

Hey Duc,

I stuck one of these on my 78

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Yamaha-New-Fuse-Box-XS650-XS750-XS1100-Fusebox-QFB5B-/170888920213?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item27c9c5fc95

works a ttreat if you want the original look but any fuse set uop will work if you get the wires right.

Cheers

Hi Steptoe,

Thanks for that. Side note, am a fan of your youtube clips. Quite creative.

I realise that the big red wire splits into a few places such as the (+) battery terminal, rectifier, aux terminal & main switch. I just wanted to reaffirm that I was able to put my own 30A in a DIY main fuse holder since mine doesnt have one.

BTW can a 78-79 carby be used on a 80-81 model? I think my carbs are a 79.  :(
