Fred, Coopz,

I think the steering lock on the RH is down on the headstock and has it's own key and lock. On the standards it is built into the ignition in some way???

You are maybe talking about 2 different things???  ???

Coopz.

For the record. Mine seems the same. It turns about 15 degrees to the left, but you can't get the lock to engage, no matter what you do with the steering.

I wouldn't be too fussy about it, it's a flimsy little thing anyway and only serves to give you a false sense of security.  ;D

Hey thanks your right, thought only Harley's had them there. Weird, the older XS's have the standard lock system.
Pity I have no key for it, no matter.
 Thanks again.

Dics Lock :-[

Was at a club AGM in Adelaide a couple of years back and won a Disc Lock in the raffle. ;D
Anyhoo, got shit faced and thank god for mates :-* who wouldn't let me ride back to the motel :-X so after doing a massive burnout on my new Avons in the competition I put the new disc lock on and left it in the lockup at the party.

Crept back in the next morning (wondering who I had to apologize to) started the bike and rode off - straight into the deck. :o
First and last steering lock I ever owned.

Here's a tip for young players: never ride a hot burnout tyre over a gravel drive.
It took a lot of miles for the embeded rocks to come out of the molten and reset rubber.
Also, the square face of the tyre tends to tip in to a lean alarmingly when you least expect it.

aahhh the luxury of a steering lock......
I modded the amount of lock (distance I could turn the 'bars) on my machine so the
lock won't line up with the lug on the frame - when in strange territory I use a disc lock.

yes mate,

on the standard the steering lock is a 3/8" pin that protrudes from the ignition barrel when the key is fully depressd and turned anti-clockwise past the "Park" position.

The pin engages on a backet on the frame's neck when the wheel/forks are are on full lock.

as Fred has stated,
also once the key is in, you need to move/jiggle the key
up and down a touch whilst its in the barrel, also the
handle bars need jiggling once there on full lock.

Mate,

has it ever locked?
I only ask to find out if you are turning the key far enough and not just to the "Parking Light" position, (a real trap for young players during daylight to flatten a battery) :-[
Do you still have the key positions labeled around the edge of the lock?
I have an old one that wouldn't turn to the steering lock posit until I took it off and gave it a liberal quirt of WD40. The Locking Pin was rusted into its recess. ::)

The steering lock will not engage on my 81'. The key pushed in but turning it full lock will cause nothing to happen. No movement in the key. Just wondering any easy fix solutions to this problem?
