Still somewhat confused, Since Bryan was able to get an aftermarket gauge working and I have seen other XS1100's with after market analog gauges then I figured Errol was talking about getting gauges from other bikes?
The 650 I showed at the start of the thread has an aftermarket gauge on it. Is the 650 different as well?

The trip meter makes an excellent fuel guage when you get into the habit of zeroing it every time you fill up

Thanks for all the great info Guy's again sorry for the slow reply.
Bryan that's an interesting option. I went to their website to have a look. I think at the moment I am drawn to the analog style gauge but never say never. Thanks for the idea.

Thanks for the Run down Errol, that suggestion is very close to what I am thinking. Maybe add a blinker light as well as a digital speedo. Or turn the fuel light into a blinker.
I am guessing it is easy enough to open the cap on a bike and see how much fuel is left but I could be wrong? Guess it would be nice to have a fuel warning light. I use that alot in the car. I know I can get 45km after the light comes on  ::)

I like the idea of a single blinker tell tale Jonesy I will pass on your explanation to the auto electrician when the time comes.

Oh and yes Errol I plan on having the bike on the road for a while before I start messing with it. I think I have wrangled full rego into my Birthday present  :P

some good info there Ev
the single blinker indicator you mentioned can be worked around by a sparky.
The bike in the first pic had a single dash light for the blinker.
The sparky I worked with at the time soldered in some diodes or something to make it work. I think they were like the electrical version of non return valves ...or I might be out of my depth here trying to explain electrical mumbo jumbo :-X

Bretts, as far as motorbike sourced speedos are concerned, you'll have to stick with a Yamaha one as these 11's have an odd speedo drive ratio.
Here's a couple of options from the round XS brigade -

^ This is an RH dash panel with blinkers, oil light and neutral light in the centre
and fuel and high beam in the tacho. Sorry, that's the best pic I have of them.

Here's some from my original Special Gauges -

^ These differ from the RH in the idiot light locations.

^ Speedo dial is plain faced. These can be had cheap from the states, though finding one that's not maxed at 80 mph is the challenge

^ note the single warning light for the indicators in the centre unit.

^ Tacho on these contains Neutral, high beam and LOW FUEL warning lights. (It'll work with your tank sender)
maybe one of these and a digital speedo??

Only hitch with these is that the wiring connectors are different, though the wiring itself is mainly the same. I'm currently looking at making a set of mini looms up to refit these to my bike which has a standards harness in it.

You ARE going to get the bike registered and running reliably before making mods like this, aren't you??

The speedo on the bike in pcture is actually off an 80 or 81 XJ 650, the one with the 8" H/light. A speedo off any of the round XS 11's will do the job as well and I'm guessing a speedo from several other yammies of the era would work too.
Once you get into the "Cafe" mind set. just about all the instruments can be thrown out, I think the speedo is usually kept to reduce fines and make road legal?

Hey Jonesy, that looks like what I am thinking.
The motogadget is a tacho, speedo, blinkers, neutral and maybe + all rolled into one but I am looking for ideas.

So are you suggesting that I could re-mount the speedo or tacho in the centre and do away with the other gauges?
My speedo is square but that could be OK as well?

Is there any other speedo/tacho's in one out there that are compatible? Is it hard to find a compatible one. I have never been to a motor bike wreckers? Yet I saw a cafe racer workshop had a cupboard full of gauges

I am looking back at the heritage rego at the moment, could have that done this week (although the last ride i had it seems the back brake needs better adjustment) After talking to several people it seems this may suit me well enough, I am thinking for at least one year anyway to get me started. Especially when my mechanic lives in Bathurst  :P

Hey Brett hows it goin'?
got that thing registered yet?
rather than splash out the big buck$, you could work with what you've got, with your boily's trade you could knock up some smick looking brackets and do something like this

I havent got any more detailed pics than this one, but it uses a speedo like yours and the holes at the top triple clamp that used to mount the instrument support bracket were perfect for a couple of idiot lights like oil pressure and blinker....or whatever

Modified gauges and headlights
« Reply #1 on: October 16, 2012, 06:13:50 PM »
I have been wondering what options I might have for aftermarket gauges, headlights and such.
This bike come up on Facebook and there is much I like such as the simplified headlight and gauge.

http://www.returnofthecaferacers.com/2012/10/yamaha-xs750-by-wrenchmonkees.html

The gauge is a Motogadget (nice), not sure on the headlight.
looks like you will not get much change out of $800 for the gauge.

I wonder what I should look for if I decided on a trip to the wreckers?

I am liking then idea on a small yet powerful headlight and dito with the guadge but wonder what options I do have?
