Blue spot brackets

Hi Folks...

I've not been on here often enough to have kept up with this, apologies for not putting in my 2p (UK) worth .

I've been running a Sport (5K7) with blue-spot calipers since 2007:



As you can see, the brackets required are quite different from those for the "Standard" models

That said, the 3mm spacers required are just the same...

Points to note:  I used braided steel brake hoses and an FJ1200A master cyl.  The result is a HARD lever, but invcredible brakes...

Down side?  The pads wear very quickly - around 5K miles and they're down to the line...

And... Using the original 5K7 slotted rotors, I found that they started to "warp" very slightly (felt as a slight pulsing at the lever), so I fitted disks from a 2H9 model - sorted.

The bike is in bits at the moment, so I could get the brackets and scan them or draw around them with some dimensions noted... I'm sure someone would be intersted in making some up - They would suit 5K7, 5N5, 4R0, 4W1 and 10M (XJ) models... I doubt there will ever be a mod to retrofit these calipers to the 3H3 (SF) style forks with their "swinging" calipers, as the fork leg forms half the pad retaining mech...

I've also bought in a pair of EBC fully floating disks to fit and they will 100% suit these fixed calipers, not cheap, but worth it, I'm sure...

These give double bees dick clearance and work fine.

Mal Pitman supplied the brackets and spacers.

To alleviate the problem of minimal clearance he now can provide 5mm spacers instead of 2mm spacers.

I believe he still makes them?

These give double bees dick clearance and work fine.

For those that didn't catch the other thread. We found that some bikes have a wider rim than others and this became the obvious reason some found less or no clearance.
Mal decided he would increase the spacer thickness so the disk was further again from the wheel and then milled out the adapter plate to match.
I received the replacement plates and spacers the other day and fit them this afternoon. Everything seems hunky dory. I now have 2.3 mm clearance from the calliper to the wheel.
I suggest anyone that has the plates from Mal and found the clearance problem should contact Mal who I believe is looking to swap yours for the modified set. Much better than washers and such. Oh one little problem I found was that the existing calliper bolts from the bike (which I used to bolt the blue spots on) now run out of thread (plate has been milled so not as thick) A couple of washers solved this for now but I will look for suitable bolts.

this conversion definitely has close tolerances,
same as scarfey I had to do some additional shimming.
The right calliper when first mounted up was hitting the spokes on the wheel, so to get around this I placed a washer between the fork lug and the bracket, the calliper to wheel clearance was now Ok but this introduced a new problem.
As mentioned above in Mal's email to Brett, The XS disc is 7mm thick and the part of the calliper that straddles the disc is only 8mm wide. So the calliper was now rubbing the disc, so I placed those XS tab washers that you use on the disc mounting bolts under the disc with Mal's 3mm spacers, and the disc is now fairly central in the calliper.
The left calliper went on Ok with no rubbing, but feeler gauge measured only 0.3mm between calliper and wheel. So as Brett would say for Murphy's sake I did the same shimming as the other side, 0.3mm is just a little too close for comfort.
Just for the record my blue spots came from a 2003 R6.

But I have nothing but a bee's dick clearance from wheel to calliper. I know it was meant to be close but I am actually VERY impressed with the bike that something can be this close and not rub at some point around the wheel.
I think I will need another 2mm spacer ?
It is this close all the way around and this is a picture of each calliper both exactly the same, bloody amazing I reckon but surely I need a little gap for murphy?

Yeah what Bretts said do they sit that close, looks like tempting fate

noz.....the big plus with this mod is the "feel" afforded bjy these units.....mor e stopping power with less effort....
I was able to lock the front wheel with the OEM units tho....
It is time and money well spent I reckon

Jonesey, I wasn't trying to show off. That's a link to a lathe that's currently for sale on the bay sort of local to you.

George, this is what mine looks like at the moment. Had to bore out some spacers today for my spray rig's trailer wheels but I had to use the milling head to hold the tapered drill bit. It's hiding the tools and bits in an acceptable fashion???



I still haven't a clue how to use it properly (just ordered a How-to-operate-your-lathe CD to enlighten me a bit into the capabilities of this little number) but it's been damn handy to have all the same.

When I bought mine the bloke advertised the calipers [on Ebay] but when I contacted him he was also able to provide the complete system so now I have a matching master cylinder.

I was able to reuse my original after market Hel brake lines.

EDIT: Errol my lad, that lathe is far too clean how can you operate if all the the tools aren't lost in the swarth and stuff built up all over it.
