Also, may have sent you down the garden path regarding the valve stem seals.
Found these at Bert Kingstons parts site in OZ - $6.60 each! - CLICK
Sorry if you've already ordered some. He has a lot of stuff for XS's. Cables, gaskets etc.

Thanks Errol
I couldn't get .9mm mig wire down the hole. I better get the carbies back of and have a look ?

Brett, that barb on #2 carb only has about a 1/16" hole in it or less so don't expect too much vacuum from it while idling. (might make it move around a fair bit, though)
It depends also on how far open the carb butterflies are at idle. if they're open too much = low vacuum

Remember, when doing a compression test, hold the throttle wide open to get a proper reading.

Thanks for the idea Jonesy I will see what I can do about checking that. There is a hell of alot of pressure comming out the exauhst. It thumps out nice and strong so fingers crossed it is not bad enough that it would ruin the vacum.

Bike is on hold for a few days now. :-X

There is some vacum coming from the carby but unsure if it is enough?? I am guessing I should be able to poke some .9 mig wire down that through into the carbie and I can't so it seems I better take the carbies back off and have a look.

Nice move forward this morning. I took the carbies off and gave them another pre-sync used doubled over tubing to replace the vacum caps then put the airbox back on.
It was idling much better but would not accelerate well. Looking at the vacum advance it was not moving. Moved it by hand and wola that's it.
But the vacum advace does seem to be working when I suck on the hose. I replaced the hose just in case but still not working. It seems the only thing left is that the sucktion is not comming out of the vacum stem from the carby. I pocked a small allen spanner down and it stops. Should the hole be the full size of the stem?
Those filter boxes are no fun so not keen to take the carbies off again just yet.

Has anyone tried to modify the filter box to make it easier to remove/replace yet? I am thinking of a coupple of ideas.

Thanks Hen
I did try to sync the carbs similar to you said following this guide. CLICKY
After a couple of attempts, I thought it got it pretty close on the last attempt. It seems to be running worse. I mucked around with the idle mixture screws a little but it seemed it was running so rough that it was impossible to gauge any difference. That's when I thought I should check the timing.
I have ordered the carbytune and colour tune kits. I am happy to wait for them. Maybe I could check the valve thing Jeff suggested. I hadn't got my head around what he was saying yet so I will give it more thought.
The only other thing I might do at the moment is take a video so you can hear it run.
Might be interesting but I didn't want it to turn into a fiasco of youtube tuning  :o

Hi just coming in on the tail end of this.. to roughly set up carbies you can use  a feeler gauge to adjust each carby butterfly to the same opening clearance which will work till you get all those tools to fine tune it ;) of course you need the carbies off to do this and something else which might have been mentioned if your needle seats unscrews remove these and check the little filters are not blocked...

Sure, mate. Put her on.
I'll explain that a compressor is an essential part of an XSive workshop and being able to check tyre pressures etc prior to every ride is a major safety factor, and safety sells these days.

How's that sound?? I could embellish with a few more details but she'll get the gist

That's it, mate. More tools is good!! A compressor would be a handy one to have too. Doesn't have to be a biggie. Just 7-10 CFM to cover spray panting and stuff later on.

Yes well I got a bit toey today and thought about taking it down the bike shop for them to put thiers on it but the cost of that will pay for the carbytune and colortune in one go  >:(
Just have to be patient for a while and buy some more tools  :'(

Sorry, mate. Post nightshiftitis. That deal in the first link looks great! I think the colourtune thing alone is worth around $100 So go for it. It's an investment that will pay for itself in short time.

Forget the twin gauge setup. Useless on a four cylinder motor.
