Jeff, I was going to check that next time I visited the Bundy Bike Hospital (Steptoes Place).
We're teeing things up for a workshop day as  my camchain's run out of adjustment travel and I'm going to check my valve clearances again. Also was going to do a compression check to set a baseline figure for the engine refresh.

No worries, Pete. I'm going to be checking everything once I open the old girl up. In particular, the valve guides & seals, and the bearings. Also going to do 2nd gear as I've had issues with that for about the last 4-5 years. It's not that bad that I have to skip through to third, though. It just shows itself when being heavy handed off the line.

i think a cpl of guys on the us site have bought
them without any complaint so far.

hey errol,
u mite be able to get away with just doing the top end,
but with that many k's on ur bike ur better off doing the bearings
as well, i thought mine would be sweet but after a cpl of months
i started getting knocking in the bottom end, the extra compression
with new rings etc can put extra stress on the lower end.

Errol, they seem like a great buy.....compared to the asking price in general for the USA Wiseco kits.
As long as quality is there for longevity.
They are Taiwanese by manufacture.

Paul, There most probably will be when finally open the old girl up. It'll be interesting to see how much wear there is in the bores as Steptoe's hinted that it may only need a set of rings to refresh it. There's still no noises etc coming from the motor, no smoke, either. It wasn't even leaking like on the Bourke run, though I was giving it  to it on the ride through Brisbane's Backblocks (Aussie's playground) It just smells a bit.
I reckon that for the price, I had to buy the kit just to put on the shelf. The guys got about 86 more kits at my last check, but sure as eggs, if I waited till I was going to do the rebuild, there'd be nothing around like that.

Ok guys. I finally bit the bullet. On my last day trip over 840klms (playing a lot in the hills), I used about 1 litre of oil. Slowly, the old girl is using more and more oil, despite going to the thicker grade so I've taken the bold step in preparation for the inevitable. I won't be fitting the kit straight away, but lets just call it my Special's superannuation fund.
Here's the thing. I found exactly the same kit on US Ebay presumably from the same Japanese manufacturer - read it and weep anyone who'd bought the one at the top of this thread.

Total cost was $184.00 shipped to my door, a rather substantial saving!

The kit as advertised. Note - these are 1196cc kits with 74.5mm diameter pistons.

Pistons are based on the OEM ones. Just the diameter is different.

They stock a fair few other Jap bits.

Got a reply to my enquiry tonight -

Quote
Dear eveready1100,

G'day Errol

The gaskets are made by Interface USA. The pistons are modelled directly on the OEM pistons. All parts are sourced from Japan are very good quality. I have sold a few of these kits and always get great feedback on them. I don't offer pickup but postage within Australia is only US$19.95

Thanks for your enquiry. If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards
Ozzy

Dunno if that helps much. The biggest issue I can see is that in order to use this kit, you have to overbore past the biggest Wiseco kit, so you would have to commit to a new set of barrels if you bought this kit. He does sound positive, though eh?
