dropping in to say thank you to Bryan and steptoe, got the spark sorted today.  Bryan and I got it started today, running like a hairy goat. Removed  carbs and they were/are pretty gunked up from sitting for so long, have started the cleaning process and should have it running pretty sweetly by the weekend. I will then be putting it on the market, as Bryan can verify after being in my garage today I just can't justify keeping it, well at least resgistration wise.
Thanks again guys.

Have you used plastic safe contact cleaner on all the connectors? They often cause as many problems as the earth points and are easy to fix.

Have a look along the wiring for wear points. If there's a spot where it's been worn or excessively pulled you may have a short.

The stray spark suggest is a puzzle.

ok have noticed today that after testing to see spark at a removed plug it discharges one lonely spark when you turn the ignition off, any clues what that means, I have never seen that before. I also tried swapping coils with a known good set but still no spark..chris

open the kill switch too,, it gets full of guck as well

I did that LATE :-) last night but as the motor turns over with it in the run position and it does not in the off position I presume it must be ok?. Even so I will give all the wiring inside a good clean out today.... chris

thanks for the diagram link, hopefully it will help, at least now I can id all the little black boxes, it really is a complicated harness for it's time.
I have been cleaning all the earth connections, it is actually the first thing I did but I can probably find more now that I have the diagram.... chris

Chris

First thing to do is clean up all the earthing connections on the bike. Take a piece of wet and dry to the connections.

These can often kill your spark and are the easiest thing to fix first.

hi chris,, I'm up here in Bundy but may be down near brissy {beenleigh} over Easter,, could bring mine over and have a muck around if that suits

Hi there, I was up your way about a month back,  the wife and I took a ride up to see my nephew and his family, they live at Moore park Beach, top spot, I could live there too.

I think I will be home over easter, I will just be back from the vjmc rally in Vic, I'll be flying down and riding back.  That said I really hope to have it sorted next week sometime, If I am still having probs I will let you know, thanks for offering...... chris

Having the fairing is a big bonus. Very rare.

Your probably right, it'll scrub up fairly easily. Looking again it hasn't been washed even, best way to see it I suppose.

What mileage is on it? Probably under 70k if the original pipes are still on it.
