Take the bull by the horns ay?
well I didnt quite do that,..... but I did slit its throoat right down one side like your attached pic. looks like some one attempted a fix but was off there face and got the screw in crooked, the head did appear to be cut off and put in that end first.

might do an ortopsy and see what the go is
but on outward appearance there is no sign of cutting and hacking like the post you refer to and the pointy end of the screw is sticking out...so how was it screwed in? I shall delve deeper when i get back from Cobar
Jonesy. "take the bull by the horns"...and get a pair of pliers or vise grips and simply unscrew the inserted screw out of the coil...and all will be revealed.
My guess is the head was more than likely cut off a screw and filed to a point............ the  pointy end was inserted first , (Mmmmmmm.......reminds me of that Ditty about the "Woodpeckers Hole" ) ,  to partially tap a thread ,or not, and then reversed and inserted. There was no need for cutting anything away from the coil casing...........they more than likely just cut the 'Hi Tens" lead flush .
You can extend onto a plug lead, ( copper wire type only), in this manner and just use some adhesive lined heat shrink tubing.

progress has slowed a bit due to other "stuff" going on but I managed to slip in a spare hour up in the shed and got some simple adaptor blocks made to mount the new green 3 ohm coils.

Question for the spark arrestors out there

can I use the original spark plug caps with the new 3ohm coils?

That screw you refer to is something a previous owner had installed.
To my knowledge.....the hi tension lead inserted all the way to the front end of the coil casing where it then connected to the secondary windings.
This is shown and confirmed in a post regarding....replacing the leads where the casing is part cut away to help install the new lead.
I ll have a look  and post  the link.

Yeah Pete
I was referring to the seal itself.

Engine building has taken a momentery back seat........while theres some room to move I'll do a green coil make over.  clock up some more $$$$ for the tight arse rebuild.
The original coils have well and truly had there day
Note how stiff the plug leads are, under the weight of both coils they still hold there installed shape....rigger mortis
.

Another reason for replacing the coils is that one of the leads was snapped off
note the screw sticking out at an angle....looks like the screw might have only had hold of the outer insulation layer? maybe the coil assembly bloke was working with a hangover that day way back in the 70's ......hmm maybe in the 70's he was off his face ;)
