A couple of thought to put forward for discussion would be...

1) By using colourtune on our bikes.i would of thought this would take the guess work out of mixture settings....and they would of been spot on.
1a) If bad fuel had been taken on board or timing was an issue..........Xtian would of noticed this in the bikes performance.
There has been no mention the bike performed poorly before it failed.

2) Given that Xtian was in a group and others filled up at the same fuel stops.........why was it only Xtians bike that failed like this?

3) Given the reports thats everyone from time to time had "Happy Hands' on and off the throttle during the ride up and back it does nt seem Xtains riding  was any different to others.

4) If the mixtures were out..........as discovered at Bourke.....so were a few others..both lean and rich...why did we not have more failures?

Im going to play a little of the "Devils Advocate"....just for discussion

1) Would the Dynatek coils and type of plugs create a hotter combustion?
Causing the engine to run hotter than originally designed to..........developing failure after an extended period of time at speed.

2) Would the overheating of the top end of the motor due to low oil be a contributing factor.

3)Could it be a combination of both 1 and 2 ?

4)Were any changes made to the bike prior to the trip that was different to previous settings/plugs/oil or other?

5) Could it be a combination of any or all queries i ve mentioned?

6)If the pistons holed due to mixtue/fuel.......and 3.5 litres of oil was expelled at once........which would of been the case......why was there no evidence of unburnt oil dripping from the exhaust........or riders in pursuit comming to grief with all that oil expelled at once over the road.

7) Mal would of recieved the bike with the crankcase filled with over 3 lites of oil in it which i put in....and still was only just starting to show in the sight window.

Is he aware that there was not a drop of oil to be seen or shown in the crankcase through the filler hole sight window onboard before the refill at Bourke campsite?
The bottom of the crankcase was visible through the filler hole....with nadda oil showing.....using Byans powerful torch.
Where did 3.5 litres of oil go.........all at once if it was nt out the exhaust ?

this is Mal's explanation....
"This has probably been caused by ignition timing, bad fuel, lean mixture, or a combination of all three.
I would suggest poor fuel as the probable start cause.
If you run poor fuel with a little too much advance and a lean mixture because of the fuel grade, and a long steady ride a holed piston is the outcome."

 :( :(

Gee, mate. That's bad news. Sounds like a massive lean out? Big dose of ethanol rich fuel at the last stop??? Maybe.
At least that explains where the oil went.

Seeing as Mal knows his way around XS's a bit, it's in good hands now. Keep us updated and if there's any bits we can help you with, just ask.
