I'll start at a different point,, maybe the "smoke screen every one else rode thru was the oil being burnt to the point of empty, creating a hotter than ordinary enviroment, thus making any difference of fuelling or any other "small" discrepency larger than life
as for the bike now being in the carressing hands of Mal and his boys, I very much doubt there will be any second hand parts going into this rebuild
