I took to the tank with an orbital sander and a razor blade.

The original paint is under all the other refinishing and patching.  I took it down to the fellow that is going to paint it and he says he will be able to colour match it
 ;D

Once he's got the colours, it's down to be stripped, then repaired...

The only thing standing in my path is money.  That's why I work.

Ray..................here you go..........done in cast rather than plastic though.

http://www.badgereplicas.com.au/

Thanks for the link.  They look like nice jobs.  I wonder if they can re-finish original plastic badges?  Must ask them.

Going through their list, the badge they identify for XS (YT11) has screw holes.
The one identified for XJ (YT10) doesn't.

Mine doesn't have screws, it uses double side tape.  The tail badge has two plastic pins through the rear.

Tank, side cover & tail badges.  All up $200 + GST + P&H.  Should have them for under $230.00.

I just got a parts list from YMA.
The grey is 'diamond silver'
The silver is 'frost silver'

No other details, but at least I've got a parts list.

Now to go back and read other replies.

this one is mine - painted thus in 1998

Any chance of thinking back 14 years to the colours you used?

There have been quite a few small variations in the pin stripes over the years.  I think I can grid a photo and then enlarge it so the positions of the various features are as close as possible to original.

I always like the plastic badges, especially the '1.1' badge.  Mine are all pretty well past it.  There was a company in SA doing silver plastic chrome, but not gold.  I may have some bother with the badges.  But we'll see. They may be immediately available from a dealer, I've not started looking properly.

I got no result with the graphics from Motographix.  They have a graphic that is gold with a black inner pin stripe, not grey.  That suxs.

Ray...i know it s not what your particularly after.....but here s a pic of the 2H9 79F Model.
Close pinstriping detail to what your after.
Just a personal opinion.....but i do like the Decals done this way rather than the raised lettering.
I have seen some examples of that on UK and German released models.

How it was in November '82.  OEM paint scheme.

I just found and scanned these from prints.  Trouble is, the weather at Mudgee was terrible - end of a drought with dust filling the air and, the photos are 30 years old, so how good will the colour be anyway.
Then, of course, you could add in the variation in original exposure, chemical processing of the negatives and printing of the prints.
It's a wonder we ever got photos that looked anything like what we looked at!

Looking at these photos, I would never re-position the tank badge at that angle.  It doesn't look right.  If you drop the bike onto the ground, the back end is going to be lower, so the badge will be even more kicked up.  Things one doesn't notice. ???

And the pin stripe around the back is a single, not a double.

Thanks for the link regarding the graphic.
I was just on the 'phone to xtian and couldn't quite understand exactly what he was describing as a difference between the US and Oceania pin stripes.  Looking at the kit photographed in the link, I understand now.

I must check my old photos to see how it was originally.

Also, I just bought a repo seat foam, from the company in the link, for my RD.  It was delivered pretty quickly and it appears to be excellent shape match.  I'll find out for sure when I get the seat back from having it all assembled.

The .com site link confirms what I found earlier today.  The web site for 'colorite' (?) doesn't go back further than '86.

I resprayed mine 20 years ago, without going to the effort of a resto, just similar to new.  The painter - my uncle who had retired from the game - used some Mazda colours which I reckoned where close.

What would be good would be for a near new original tank to be put up on a colour matching machine thingy.  (from the long list of thingy machines made by some chinese company manufacturing everything - no longer acme, it's now ccme)

Now, to open my old photo albums.

And I've sent an email to motographix in Lidcombe.

I've spoken with two painters down here.  One has done previous work for me, they painted my sidecar body and did an lovely job.  The other is said to be the 'go to' bloke for most of the classic bike owners around here.
$2200 from one
$1000 plus repair costs - there is a triple clamp dent, for one.

Which one doesn't really want the job, but if I am prepared to pay...

I'm going to start with stripping it back.  The recommendation is to have the tank acid cleaned, which I can get done down near Albury.  That will take it back to bare.
I expect I will then have to re-Kreem the inside of the tank.
I'll take the seat strips down too.

For the sidecovers & tail piece - random orbit sander, hand sanding and time.

For some stupid reason - maybe because I couldn't afford a new bike? - around '85 I had it re-painted blue.

Then, around '94, I had it re-painted a second time, in the Mazda colours.  That was when it had the sidecar attached and the whole shebang was tidied up.

Now I'm trying to get back to where I was.

cheers

Ray..the gold pinstripe for the tank is available on ebay.
I ll try and find the link for you.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/YAMAHA-1981-XS1100-VENTURE-TANK-DECALS-GRAPHICS-SET-/300487125505?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item45f66daa01
Email this guy..........

As regards to original colour spec............maybe Mal Pitman might be the guy to help on that one.
Sourcing brochures or even purchasing a part such as a side cover......... in original paint to colour match from might be an avenue as well.
I ll have a look through my brochures for you.
Here s a link to that discussion on the .com site

http://www.xs11.com/forum/showthread.php?t=26504

After reading through that link i think your going to have to find a part to colour match from.
Good luck.

G'day all.
I'm about the employ a spray painter to re-paint the XS.  Mine is the grey/silver 1980 model & I'm going to start collecting photos and info to try & get the correct colours and correct scheme.  There is a gold pin stripe there somewhere.
The colours I've got mine in at the moment are from the Mazda colour chart and the pin stripe was also 'near enough' at the time.

This time, as it's going to cost a bomb, I want it as near as to oem as I can get it.

Does anyone have the information, or provide a link to help in my search?

cheers
