Ok Bert. How does it look in the flesh, as opposed to the photos? It does look to be a pretty clean bike. Maybe it's the colour that makes it look ...... different.
Here's links to original discussions regarding your bike - CLICK and CLICK
Now if you can just humour me here, on the steering head there should be a series of digits actually stamped into the headstock on the right hand side. Can you check to make sure they match the compliance plate. I ask this as mine don't match. The importers I got my bike from mustn't have been paying attention on the day and jotted down the engine and frame number details, but took the bike by its appearance (looks like an RH) as opposed to its actual designation (is a Special ) and must've had a guess as to it's actual date of manufacture which is clearly shown on the factory data sticker on the left side of the headstock
My main reason for asking is the fact that the sidecovers and seat are not correct for a 78-79 standard. The mounts at the top of the covers are round pins (aka RH) as opposed to the slotted fittings used on the Standards. The shape is the same as the RH and these will not fit on a Standard. Same with the seat, as the RH's and specials have the rear mounting brackets sited about 3/8ths -1/2 an inch higher up off the frame which create big gaps when a Standards seat is fitted to an RH and made it impossible to fit an RH seat onto a Standard (without surgery)
Sorry about the dodgy pics with the solo seat but if you look closely at the rear of the frame in the foreground, you can see the slotted mounting brackets are higher on the Special, which is the same as the RH.

^ Standard frame ^

^ Special frame ^
Also, Jonesey has suggested, we need the engine number prefix to sort out that side of things also.
Sorry if I'm a pain in the butt with the Q's but I'm just being thorough and don't want to show you down the wrong path, mate

The compliance plate on the headstem is easily swapped over as it is just held on by 2 rivets.
I don t think the RH side covers will fit a standard frame locating tabs.
If the motor has a kick start shaft sticking out .........then the motor is off a 78 standard.
The bike looks all RH except for the front end and gauges.

Hey Bert
are the frame and engine number the same?
If so it looks like someone has put most of the cosmetic pieces from a sport (wheels, tank, blinkers, master cylinder, seat, etc) onto a standard frame and motor.

If there not the same, someone has made a hybrid (as mentioned before) from a "78" standard (all the square stuff and frame)  and the round stuf, seat, wheels and small tank from a RH or special. the officianados will correct me but I think in 78 & 79 only standards were available, then in 80-83 the special and RH were offered along side the standard.

Hope this helps

bike arrived today - not too bad

the compliance plate reads

yamaha xs1100  5/78 - 2H9100657

we now assume she is an 78 model but still not sure if it is a sport or not. She has the rounded tank, round blinkers but square headlight and gauges. It has a factory black engine and has the gold mag wheels, it has the sport seat with the integrated handles (no tail piece)  - we wish to restore her back to original so would appreciate any ideas on what exactly that is !
thanks
