I had some, racetech gold valves, they're
a gadget for killing hard bumps. From memory
 were dear as fk..
The "gold" just means shiny brass, work by spring-loaded
disc popping open at the set pressure, simple-as...
Can wind them down or up to suit, just a bolt with a spring on it,
main "valve" just 3 big holes.. They let the fork
oil blast through and smooths hard jarring
from pot-holes or mean bumps.  If savvy you could probably rig some sort of home-made ones for a couple of bucks without too much drama

here is a better pic.... only preload and damping adjustment - it's only the springs that are new....

They look like they will do the job Bryan. Do these have rebound adjustment as well?
I am very close to bottoming out on mine not sure if I can adjust that out but they do feel very good so far?

OK fitted and very cool - a nice ride with plenty of travel, just need to set the preload to ideal and
I will be happy - well happier that is....at low speed the outcome is what I hoped for.....
I will be happy if the high speed behaviour is sorted too... ;)

the front end setup is in some ways driven by the rear......I have long suffered from a "too hard" rear setup
the Bitubo shocks, while set with the lightest spring rate that Bitubo supply, have driven the front causing a bouncing motion
on some surfaces with a "weave" effect on fast sweepers.
So.....
these springs have a free length of 260mm, an ID of 40.5mm and are comprised of 8.5mm wire - with a spring rate of 2.4kg/mm

these new bespoke springs have the same free length, ID, are comprised of 8.0mm wire - with a spring rate of 2.2kg/mm

can't wait to fit them......

Thanks Melbs, I was so set on race tech for the front forks now I look I am having trouble sourcing the model info to purchase? They do have a retail outlet in Sydney called Shock treatment. They seem like a one stop shop full of advice. As long as the prices are not exorbitant :(

YSS have 3 different options and also do the fork valve emulators. The Adelaide shop are very well thought of from what I've read.

Thanks Bryan I think I will definatly go with the Race tech Emulator setup for the front forks.

I now have the Bitubo rear shocks on my list of possibilities. I found this site http://www.motorcycle-parts.com.au/Twin_Shocks.htm that seems to give a brief run down. I guess I would go for the VME grade but is there only one type for the XS1100 or can I stipulate a spring rate?
What rate did you get?

I am starting to think I might get a decent brake and suspension package for about $1000 but this shopping is hard work   ;D

hello Bretts
I have the setup you see - continuous rate Racetec springs, the gold emulators, (drilled fork components as specified by Racetec)
the preload needs to be set and can be a bit finicky to do.
I am using Bitubo rear shocks but the spring rate is a little heavy - I havent been able to determine by how much or acquire replacements as yet and am compensating by keeping the preload light.
My steering head angle has been modified (steeper by 1 degree) and the rear shocks are longer giving the machine a more sporty aspect than the stock machine. It steers quicker.....

hope this helps

Hey Bryan I am looking at updating the suspension on mine, I was thinking race tech modification for the front forks and hagon shocks for the back.
What setup have you got now and how is that working for you?
