hey steps,
sounds like the pilot jets might be larger than stock?
can u confirm that there 40's,
and the air jets at the back of the carb bell are 185,
 also with the float levels set them at 23mm, if u set them to low (around 24mm) the engine
will run lean and hot and acceleration will be flat.

AIR FUEL mix screws

we'd been working on Makzy's carbs last w/end,
he,s been working on them for ages and can,t quite get them smick, didn,t matter what he,d done, when put back on the bike, it ran rough and very rich,, {black smoke @ 2000 rpm rich}
I persuaded him to bring them round before he gave up on them,, we pulled them down to 4  bare alloy bodies,

Makzy had drowned them in carb cleaner, {even set them in a drum of thinners to soak once} every time he pulled them down, so there was no need to go down that track again, instead I had my "cleaning" system set and ready to go,,we set them in a pot of simmering boiling water upside down on bolts so the bubbles and steam could wash all the impurities from air ways and pipes,, the scum left on top of the pot at water line is quite amazing

any way we put the carbs {tin tops} back together, very meticulously and fussy fussy, we put a new kit thru each of them, which included all jets, air fuel screw, spring washer and o-ring, new diaphragms had been fitted previous, needles were set at one up off neutral, mains 110's, idle jets std, pilot jets std, screws set at 1 1/2 out, floats set at 23.7 - 24mm

Makzy took them home, put them on the bike, with the exact same result,, {you can imagine his reaction},, so this morning I went round to his place with the trailer and picked up the bike and carbies and back to my shed with the "tools"

this is where it gets interesting,, i put the sync gauges on, yes they were out but not way out, sorted that, and put the colour tune on,
at 1 1/2 turns out it was burning bright orange, to get it to burn dark blue the screws were turned right down till they seated, the bike was running sweet and smooth, at 1/4 out they burned with the slightest touch of orange, but I wasn,t going to leave them seated, I even gave them a tweek to make sure the o-ring was seated in the base

I went thru with ether, there are no air leaks, or vacuum issues
with out getting a micrometer out to measure the screws, they looked exactly the same as the ones that came out,
we checked a few other basics, the bikes happy now, we,ll run it like that for a week or two and see what changes if anything

any ideas to the why or how they are happy sitting that low and has anybody else had the same experience, its the only set I,ve come across that's done this
