An XS and an RD.  Sounds a bit like my garage (mine are a '72 250 & '80 G).
If the two XSs become subject to some actual interest, Temora (where they are) is only 100km away from here.  We could make arrangements, find some time and I could poke up there with a camera.

No, I wont buy it from under you. I already have boxes of spare 1100 bits and an RD400 that is screaming at me to pull it to pieces :-\ ???
cheers

You could do worse than follow up on this one:

LINK

A 2nd bike for spares and the main bike sounds pretty good from his brief description. Fair price for 2 bikes.

Ken

That bike is $2,500 more than it should be.

It is an RH (5n5), it has the round clocks, headlamp and the swirly wheels etc. But the tank and sidepanels are from a Standard. Grabrail looks like it came off a special, definitely not off an RH.

It's not very standard and it hasn't been nicely restored. It looks pretty good compared with the type of bike you see going for $1200, but $5,000? Not a chance.

It would probably need all the usual jobs doing to it and all the small stuff needs painting by the looks of it.

Mal Pitman sold an XS for not much more than that money and it was basically brand new. Horifically overpriced in my opinion. Be patient and something much nicer will come along.

Most bits you can source over here, just the odd bit nobody's got may have to go OS, but given the current exchange rate, that's better than in the past.
Not that I'm biased, at all. I've got other issues that my bike is a US model so some parts are nearly impossible to get here, but they can be had, and not that expensively. Just have to be patient.
I'd like to see an how an XJR would hold up after 30+ years, and nearly 300,000 odd klms. Mines nearly there now, and it's still going strong, and doesn't look too bad, despite not having any real restoration work done on it in it's life.

gday errol, have to admit, i really like the look of the xs, what cought my eye especially was a picture of a black special here thats the big brither to my 650 special,i will only ever have 3 bikes. my rd, xj650 and either an xs1100  or the xjr1300, i have to admit its possible one of the most pleasureable things ive ever done restoring the rd, are parts still available for the xs here or do we have to hunt on the internet from o/s

Wrong section.... Doesn't matter. we'll find it.
Hmmm. where to start.. Letsee.
Small bike resto vs big bike resto.. in reality, not too much difference in the final cost, unless going for the full motor overhaul, but that's another story. Read the topic, Phil's Bike. he's got one of the nicest XS11's to grace our site, and his rebuild would probably cost about what your RD has, and his bike is a thing of real beauty.
XS vs XJR ..... No comparison. The XJR has all the bells and whistles compared to the XS. Huge, effortless power, good economy, a very rigid frame with really good suspension at both ends, huge, grippy tyres. Only downside is chain drive and a noted weakness in the rear subframe when hanging racks etc. off them. The XS is a lot cheaper to fit out tyre wise and you'd get more klms out of them too.
The XJR has often been quoted as the bike the XS would've evolved into, barring the obvious shaft drive omission (FJR???) but the biggest thing is that anyone can have one as they are a newish bike. The XS is a dinosaur Admittedly, but it gets the looks wherever you go on it.
P.S. There's been a couple of bikes on the Bay recently that could have been just what you wanted, so keep an eye out there, mate.

gday , ive been missing in action for the last 8 months or so, i recently started a thread on my rd350lc rebuild, i still have my 1981 xj650 special that i ride everyday.when i 1st signed up here i was keen to get an xs1100,then changed my mind to get one to restore, decided on the RD instead as its only 2 cylinders and a lot simpler than the big 4, i thought it would be an easier iniation into bike resto,s, now i can see an end to it, im in 2 minds, either get a low K xjr1300 or get the xs1100 and restore, i still dont know which way to go, i know you good folk here are biased and rightly so but now i know how few parts there are in australia at reasonable prices, thats for the rd at least,im hesitant, let me know your thoughts on an xjr1300  Vs  xs1100, once again thanks, ken
